hood release won't pop the hood open - 2001 Jimmy

I recently bought a 2001 Jimmy. I opened the hood when I bought it but it's been so miserably cold that I haven't paid it any attention since then. When I went to open the hood yesterday the handle pulls all the way up 90 degrees (with normal-ish feeling tension on it) but the hood doesn't release. Never had this happen before - where do I start to get it to release?

Mine does that once in a while too.I just give the hood a little thump with my fist,usually opens.Once open I lube the mechanism with a dab of wheel bearing grease(on a small brush).

I pulled the handle and pounded, pulled and cussed and couldn't get it to pop. 4 days later (!) making a right turn it freed itself. Of course I didn't have any lube with me and there were no stores close by. I opened it, gave the latch a mean stare, and regretfully closed it again. Drove home, pulled the handle and nothing. Put a can of spray lube in the truck. This time when it popped mid-drive I stopped, opened it and lubed the mechanism. Now it works nice and easy.
