I would like to ask a question of others that are having this problem... Has anyone of you changed out you brake light bulbs say to LED's? Any mod to you brake light wiring or tail lights?

Causes for this P0573 cruise control code may include:

  • Cruise control/Brake switch defective
  • Wiring issue (e.g. pinched on brake pedal, chafed, etc.)
  • ECM (engine control module) issue (i.e. internal short, open, etc.)
  • Debris/dirt mechanically hindering brake switch operation
  • Brake switch not adjusted properly
  • Brake switch out of it's mount

Symptoms of a P0573 diagnostic code may include:

  • Cruise control completely inoperative
  • Erratic cruise control operation
  • Certain functions not operating as they should (e.g. set, resume, accel., etc.)
  • Cruise control turning on but not engaging
  • No brake lights if the brake light switch is faulty

I'm having this issue now except I can't get it to start at all. It did it once yesterday but I could retry and it would start. Today not so much. Waiting for triple A...

$525 to reprogram the ECM and anti-theft control module sound right??? That's what the dealer is telling me.

So they "fixed" it on Monday by performing the above steps. I asked if it had anything to do with the TSB regarding this anti theft alert and they said no. I assumed it was already done because I bought the truck used.

Well, on Tuesday I got stranded at work because the truck wouldn't start again. They started to tell me I was responsible for towing it back to them until I got the service manager on the phone.

They've had the truck since Tuesday and today they are telling me "the tech did some research and found a tsb"... Wouldn't this have been step 1 for diagnosing the issue???? WTF

Hey all. Just bought a 2016 Sierra Deanli with 40k miles and having same issue.  Cannot start the truck by using either key, so must use OEM remote start as work-around.  Anyone actually solve this issue?  Thanks.

Before you freak out we had the same issue while my wife and daughter were out running errands.  Drove the Tahoe home had the check the battery in the fob warning stayed on with the theft deterrent system warning.  While it started up after coming home without the light, we drove to get new batteries for the fobs.  When replacing the battery it did not want to start and threw the security code again.  After a few tries, it started but the light with the antitheft lock staying on.  Drove home let cool off and decided to check the battery cables as others suggested.  Turns out our positive battery terminal was barely attached and quite frankly I am surprised it started at all, even more, surprised it did not die hitting a bump etc.  Check the battery connections are secure and if your having the same problem as ours easy fix without going to the dealer.

Had same issues with Theft Deterrent message and StabilaTrak message. Replaced battery and problem solved. Also cleaned out grooves in both sets of keys.

Battery was 3 years old. Tested and was running hot; bad cell. Battery box area is a tight squeeze. Good luck all.

My issue was an aftermarket wireless charger.  Dont like the centet console built in charging pad so bought a mountable holder that plugs into cigarette lighter.  If my phone is in the cradle drawing power, the truck will not start.  Remove ohone from cradle starts right up. Just an electrical glitch in my case I guess.

So I have a 2015 Silverardo WT, 50k miles, with plow package but no plow or 2nd battery.    About 6 months ago, this happened.  Triple A came, said battery good... Had towed home.  The next day I cleaned all wires in battery area,  messed with wires and after trying several times to start,  it started!  Not 100% sure why though.        Now it's happening again...    Trying to start, dash goes Black except for service engine orange light, I can hear what appears to be the starter bendix click in, and nothing..  A few seconds later, sounds like the bendix kicks out and the "Service theft Deterrent system" message appears.      A few months back I thought the truck was starting to start slow..  So I think I'll try putting in a new battery as others have stated...   But i may try crawling under the truck and cleaning the starter terminals first...   I'll update on my progress..    Oh and I have an aftermarket remote starter also...   At first my dealer said it was that too...

Ok so I purchased a new battery and installed it...   No joy!    I jacked the truck up and rapped on the starter (since I've previously heard the clicking of the Bendix, at least I think so..)   After rapping, again no joy...    I did receive the "Lower window and raise window message".   No change...   So, I then just kept clicking the key and after like 6 times, it started...  Hmmmmm.....   When I was on the ground, I put a mirror up looking at wires around the starter.   All the upper wires on the solenoid were very rusted and oxidised...    So where to next?   People on here have spoken about battery fixes,  starter fix, ground wires, and a TSB which I've yet to find...   So I think I'll remove the starter and clean all the wires and see where that takes me...   All comments and suggestions are welcome!

Ok so today, I installed a new starter.   One observation is that when I removed or installed the ground wire to battery, with old starter, I got a good spark...telling me something was pulling voltage....   Now, with the new starter installed the spark is gone...    I'll keep everyone informed my "no start" condition returns..  Today is 25Feb19 and I have 56181 miles now...   Just fyi, this took me about 1-1/2 hrs start to finish...   I jacked up, removed right tire, inner fender, and easy access....

I have a 2014 GMC Sierra. It recently started doing the same thing. Service theft deterrent device. I took it to the dealer and they said the GM bulletin online said to reprogram the body control module. They did and charged me $130. It worked fine for two days and today started doing it again. So frustrating.

My 2015 Sierra Denali has what I thought was a dead battery. tonight in a driving rain storm. I had to get it jump started. When I got it jump started the service theft deterrent system light came on. I drove about 20 minutes, went into Autozone with the truck running and bought a new $200 battery and went back to my gig. When I came out the second time. Same thing happened, the truck wouldn’t start ( just clicks)  ( both times I had the truck locked with the key fob and horn honked to set the alarm.)I had to have it jumped again. I. Drove 40 minutes home . In garage. I shut it off, and then Truck started up and the theft dt light went off. Weird. Battery might not be the issue after all?? Hopefully. I can return it.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
