Raw fuel smell

Have an 01 Silverado ext cab w3.8l 140000 Km's. After driving the truck and parking in the garage I get the strong smell of raw fuel after its' sat for a bit. Definetly no leaks that I can see. Also while driving and for instance stopping at light for a bit it will have slight hesitation as though it might be slightly flooded. Starts great hot or cold. Never any issues while driving and has plently of get up and go although fuel mileage is pathetic. Where do I begin diagnosis. One of my thoughts is fuel pressure reg? Any other thoughts? Thanks

Are there any codes? Sounds to me like you should have an EVAP code, basically the pressurized fuel system is no longer completely sealed and is venting fumes into the atmosphere. Most common cause is a bad fuel cap. This is a cheap fix. And yes, it can cause your fuel mileage to suffer heavily. Usually this will set a check engine light, but not always. It is worth a try.

You don't have a 3.8l in it, but I would look at the rubber filler neck to see if it is all cracked and deteriorating.

My mistake. It is a 4.8. 3.8 is in my Bonneville. Cleaned off the top of filler tube w/emory cloth. Was some corrosion but it looked like there was a clean line where the O ring sits. Will wait for next drive to see if it helps otherwise next would be new gas cap. Filler neck looks good and clamp is tight.
