Update: Truck has been at dealership since last Monday trying to get the service 4wd message to stay off. Service advisor called and said they ordered new sensors and put them on yesterday and truck would be ready today. I called to see when I could pick it up, and advisor said tech went for a drive this morning and put truck into 4wd and it would not come back out, so they are gonna try different programs to try and see if they can get the truck back into 4wd. When do you guys say enough is enough, they've had my truck 3 desperate times, and over 20 days, and I'm not sure when I will get it back? I fish bass tournaments and have lost entry fee's cause I don't have a truck to pull my boat with, can't load up my atv and go ride. Just frustrating

Check your state's lemon laws, if this is the 3rd attempted fix for the same problem you may be able to get the vehilce "lemoned" out so you can move on and get a vehicle that works for you.

Thanks for the updates. The more I hear about this, the longer I'm going to wait before ever going back to the dealer for a recall. I still get the "Service 4wd message" every day or so but the truck works fine in 4 wd so I merely dismiss the message and carry on. I'm just too afraid to bring it back to the dealers and have them do the same thing to my truck that they have done to yours. It only has 1200 miles on it so imo there is no reason to start ripping everything under the sun apart trying to fix a problem that did not exist until I brought it in for the recall the first time.

Don't understand why dealers just don't try the recall updated tune again. It works for some.,

Because they are not going to get reimbursed by GM when they have to write up a new work order to do it again. They only get reimbursed to perform the recall once.

 

Edit: I know it's a stupid excuse but unfortunately it's the truth for the lower volume dealerships

That's not true. They can just run it as a Regular transaction, and not a recall. They will still get paid .3 for reprogramming the transfer case control module.

whats not true? and what will be the reason for the reprogram, "you screwed up and didnt do it right the first time"

 

Edit: I am by no means saying that they shouldn't reprogram it and do it correctly the 2nd time.

Once you close the ticket saying that the recall has been performed you can't go back and say your performing the recall again and expect to get reimbursed for it.

I guess you could manipulate the system and write it up the ticket as a regular transaction saying that you had to reprogram for a different reason (but just don't include anything about the incompetence on the part of your service techs to perform it correctly and then check it before allowing the vehicle to be picked up by the owner), because that part GM won't reimburse you for.......

From my experience, when they did mine the first time it was done incorrectly and I got the service 4WD message, so when they did it again correctly the 2nd time I have never got this message again.

So you are saying the fix is to keep reprogramming the transfer until it is done correctly and the 4WD message no longer appears, and just keep charging it to a regular transaction so you get reimbursed for it. Wow, ok then.

My truck is at the dealership today with this exact problem. I just had the transfer case recall done about 2 weeks ago and this message started right after that.

 

Guess I will be surprised as to what comes out of it, and what they find is wrong with it.

*Update* They called late and said they were replacing a sensor on the transmission. Part is supposed to be in today.

 

I am curious which part it is, I guess I will check the invoice.

Mines still at the dealership, the sensors they put on last week didn't fix it. They ordered some new parts to put on and see if that will fix it. Today is day 25 they have had my truck trying to fix not shifting into 4wd and 4wd service messages. I'll just be glad when I can get my truck back.

One would think that GM would have caught on by now. It seems that after the recall was performed the false "Service 4wd" messages began appearing. My dealer wants me to bring mine back in because they say that certain codes will have been set and they will know where to go from there.

There is just no way that I'm going to let them touch mine because besides the spurious message, the truck runs fine and I can shift into 4wd without a problem.

 

If I let them screw around with it who knows what else they will do.

**update again** The dealer is telling me that the problem stems from my footwell lights I installed and the jumper wire I used to hook into the domelights is causing the issue. Basically charging me $200 for labor since "I caused the problem"

 

Does this sound legit?? The dome light and xfer case on the same circuit?

Doesn't sound logical but then again, nothing surprises me anymore with these trucks.

Update............

 

Brought mine back last week and they agreed to reflash the software before taking anything apart.

 

Well, things went well for a week, no more "service 4wd message" but then yesterday I did get another one. The dealer has been more than fair, the truck runs well, no problems with the 4wd so I'll just wait until my next service call or oil change before bringing it back to further explore the message and codes.

 

Unless of course, if I really do encounter a 4wd problem.
