Thank you for this link as well.

After reading this, and all the other articles, I have come to the conclusion that indeed the sound I hear is normal. So to save everyone's time and labor and as they say at our own Calgary Stampede-"Let R' Buck!"

So we went on our journey into Saskatchewan three weeks ago, complete with "tick". About day 4, we developed a serious mis-fire. While still being able to tow, fuel economy dropped to 8 mpg. We got the unit into Watrous Saskatchewan and Mainline GM diagnosed the issue as a #3 ignition wire and coil failure.

Kudos to Mainline GM in getting us on the road in a very timely manner! This dealership rocks!

We finished our 3 week camping vacation.......and no "tick".

So now you have no ticking sound whatsoever?

Listened to a 2014 with 5.3L and 5000 kms on it this morning. It isn't close to "tick" than mine makes.

When you were at the dealership this day what did they tell you?

The main issues with direct injection is the ticking which varies based off of the weather/temprature..

I had DI engines in my last two Cross Overs so you just have to get use to it. The Sierra though muffles the sound so much I only hear it with the window down.

They are also hard on the coils of course yours being new it's just a defective one for sure.

It's almost best to change the coils packs when you do plugs if you want to avoid headaches.

Good thing is there are lots of better than OEM coils on the market now.

Thanks for the prompt reply. It's been good times with my Sierra since I got caught up with all the recalls. And with that, we've been just driving it and enjoying it. So after our journey over the Bow Summit, i've become extra cautious in watching for leaks, odors, and......this noise.

I'll go with the idea of the direct injection sound and as mentioned earlier, there's no check engine lites or misfire.

Safe bet is it's the direct injection, like everyone else is saying. I had never had an engine with direct injection, and when I noticed it I called the dealer and was told it's the injectors, and that they've been getting a lot of calls about that. If things are running smooth and you're not getting any warning lights, that's probably all it is.

The unit now runs very quiet. A co-worker even complimented the truck on it's smooth/silent idle!

I just asked to listen to a "slightly used" unit. They had a rental on site. I got the keys, fired it up (it was at operating temp already), heard very little noise (just as quiet as mine now), shut it down, returned the keys, thanked them and left.

That's why you take it to the "experts" at the dealership and not trust internet mechanics.

Or....leave it with the "experts" with no check engine light on. Just a tick. Lose the truck for 2 and a half days. Then get it returned with everyone saying "there's nothing wrong, it's direct injection noise". And then it craters anyway.

It's better to go to the dealership with an actual defect. No speculation. Here's a definite problem and they can troubleshoot it. Now it's all good again.

What I think he means is that by taking it to a dealer you will at least have a report in the system that says you experienced a problem. Then if it continues to fail you will have a history in the system to back you up if/when a failure happens. In this case you were covered because the entire vehicle is still under warranty but I've had issues with vehicles that were repaired out of warranty simply because the problems started while the vehicle was under warranty and I continued to bring it in until it was fixed or failed.

Dang!! mine certainly is not quiet, it sounds like a diesel sometimes and now your's is quiet, and you get compliments on how quiet it is, so all of our trucks have issues?

Edit: I am not being totally serious about all of our trucks having issues but I can tell you this, mine is not quiet, I would call it annoying if your outside the vehicle.
