trailer light hook up

Recommended Posts

I have the towing package on my 2014 Silverado and it looks like there is wiring where the trailer lights hook up but there is a black solid cover that will not come off and my dad has a 14 Silverado as well and his has two doors on it where you can plug lights up direct or by using the adapter that was used on the older silverados. Do I have to get a part to hook my trailer lights up?

Very odd indeed if you do have the "Trailering Package". As the option is listed in the 2014 Chevy Silverado sales brochure...standard on LTZ, LTZ Z71 and High Country...

"Includes automatic locking rear rear differential on WT, LT and LT Z71 models, trailer platform AND INTEGRATED 7-PIN AND 4-PIN CONNECTORS. On LT Double and Crewcab models, included when available Max Trailering Package is ordered."

There's lots of packages that include the Trailering Package, but no mention of NOT including the Integrated Connector. All of my previous trucks had the Trailering Package which always included the package connector. You should not have to buy the connector if you truly do have the factory Trailering Package. I know thw 2014 is very different, but I think I would ask the dealer what is up with this before I buy another connector.

Exactly!! Every GM truck I have had since 99 has had everything needed from the factory to hook up a trailers lights when the tow package was speced as an option. Maybe they cheaped out on some models starting in 14.

I have the wires, I didn't have the black connector in the link. Bought it, plugged it in, it works no problem.

Understand and glad it works, but why did you have to do this in the first place? I would think the dealer would take care of this. Did you ask your dealer?

Ask my dealer for free shit that's not already on my truck? Hahahaha ya right.

Well that explains it alright. Guess I should have known better than to ask that of someone who has that avatar pic. Lol. :)

Blue Sierra, I guess you have your answer...if you think your dealer would help (or at least explain why your model doesn't have it), give 'em a try. If you feel like Wormydog, don't bother with the dealer - he gave you the part number that will resolve it. Probably less hassle to just order and get 'er done.

My avatar has nothing to do with who I am and what I believe. But ok.

Just a joke man, just a joke. Thought you were laughing at me...

I was really interested in this because I have read it before and no one has determined why some trucks have the Trailering Package without the connectors while others do. You can pull a trailer without the Brake Controller option depending upon a lot of factors, but not without the connectors for the lights. I was just trying to make sense of this situation.

You did help with the referral to the Uhaul connector...thanks...sorry...I'm out...

My truck had the tow/haul button on the gear shifter and the trailer light wires. But no trailer light hookup and no trailer receiver hitch. Those bastards wanted $375 for a receiver hitch installed. I bought a reese on the internet for $169 and installed it myself. I have zero faith or respect for that dealer, or any dealer for that matter. I've never had a dealership go above and beyond to satisfy me, the customer. (Except when one put 10w-30 instead of the called for 0w-20 in my truck, they got my truck from my work and changed the oil again for free).

A $28 part to avoid a dealership that most likely won't do shit and will result in wasted time is worth it to me.

Wow...sorry to hear that. Now it makes sense to me. I have a very good dealer that goes out of their way for customer satisfaction. Thanks for the explanation.

I wish I had realized it didn't have the plug connections when I bought it and I would have had them put it on before. It had factory installed trailer pkg and there is wiring there for the lights but just a solid black cover. The dealers service dept is suppose to call me today when they find the part I need and I am going to tell them it should have came with the truck even though its probably only a $30 piece.
