Easiest nerf bars to modify for 3" body lift?

Looking for stainless 3" nerf bars, and wondering if there is a brand that would allow easy bracket modification to mount the nerf bars 3" higher to match a body lift.  I want the nerf bar tight against the body and hope to modify just the brackets without cutting/welding the actual nerf bar.  Anyone install bars that can comment on how easy this mod would be for their particular brand?  

 

Please comment on whether your bars mount to the frame, or body, or combination of both.  This question relates to an '03 Silverado 1/2 ton, but I'm guessing the nerf bars are identical/similar for the '99 to '02 models.
