trade in 5.3 for a 6.2?

Nice. Were kind of on the same page. I keep toys longer and pay cash for those or take very small loans. I tend to shop and shop these hard, as I buy cheap and make money on most of them when I do get rid of them. I also do not like a payment on something like a toy for a few reasons. 1. Your paying interest on something that is highly depreciable, VERY. also depending on what you put down, but if you put if you do little to nothing on a loan on MOST toys you are underwater the whole time you have a loan. 2. If the toy is paid off I dont see it as invesment, but I see them as money I can use to have fun. I no longer want the toy or need cash I can sell it even if I have to drop to rock bottom on the toy, I get full cash for it without having to pay a bank off. Toys are a losing proposition in general, eventhough I have made money on probably 60% of my toys and only lost maybe 10-20% upon resale, between maint and general use I have lost money on all toys.

Some of the toys I bought were collector cars, the last one was a 64 elcamino, black 4 speed with air, original. That got to be a pain when all I wanted was to go fast. So I started buying others peoples money pits for pennies on a dollar, much cheaper than building my own from scratch. One more lesson learned the hard way.

I like to have toys around, sometimes they go (often they go..) I have had a belair for 14 years though, but it's hardly a toy. For the most part it's just something that moves with me.

You sound like where I'd like to be in the next 26 years. Paid off home, some investments, and a couple toys I can play with. I've never been a fan of debt. Only things I finance are homes and cars.

I've had a rough start. 5 years into my first home I got some REAL bad neighbors and I had to drop a check for $3k to the bank to sell it after 3 years of absolute torture. My company was aquired, I moved to Florida, lost that job (it was a horrible job) and moved back to GA. I work for a great company now but the way the economy is, lord knows if we'll be around forever, and its only a matter of time in a high stress position that you step in it big time. I just hope I have the clout to wipe it off my boot and keep going when it happens.

I'm in a good place though, couple acres out in the country, nice house, a shop for my toy(and hopefully more toys) and a fairly nice fairly new truck. It's no 6.2, and I'll never be happy with that.. but it makes no financial sense for me to try to fix it.

Yup the stuff I find Im willing to drive to get, and not to prey on misfortunes. But I buy stuff from people that have just had kids, moving, maybe lost their job. Sounds bad. But at the end of the day I get a cheap toy and they get money to further the current ambitions.

Anybody that has built a hot rod knows in most case its a money pit. My toy I have know is a 92 chevy p/u that is 383 S/C custom truck that I bought off of ebay for 7500$. The truck books for 3500$ is really clean. The S/C and the dart heads are worth that. The guy said in the time he had it he had 40K in it, I been there that's why I quit building and go that direction. I put shocks, tires, wax, mufflers on it. If I blow the motor I put a rebuild on it and keep on trucking.

Thats another thing with throwing money into things and rebuilding and upgrading it doesnt meant he value gets any higher. I was looking into boats this summer, one I looked at was a 1996 or something but the guy had spent 40 grand in engines, paint, upolstery etc, he initially wanted 45k for a 96, that on a good day was worth maybe 24-28. I got him down to 34, he kept saying but it has all new parts. Unfortunately thats not how it works.

Ive been up and down those hills myself, self employed family biss. Learned early on to be as dept free as possible to weather most anything thrown at you. And a few toys to play with keeps the mind fresh.
