trade in 5.3 for a 6.2?

This isn't a Ford forum, so expect friendly.LOL

 

Everyone keeps going to normal driving, but I'm not talking about that.

 

I'm talking about maintaining one speed. Do any of you own a car with a clutch? Do you know how heavy your flywheel is? Do you know how much it weighs with the clutch also? It's usually pretty heavy. You know what happens when you put a lightweight flywheel on it? It revs up and down faster because 10 pounds off of rotating mass is like 100 pounds off the weight of the car. (rule of thumb). It also makes the car harder to drive, if you could just slip the clutch out before without gas and you take 10 pounds off the flywheel it will stall when you try. If you take enough weight of the motor will stall every time you try to let it idle unless you raise the idle. This is because there isn't enough inertia to get to through the next cycle and maintain the revs. If you put heavy wheels on it it will take longer to get to 70 at any throttle and it will take longer to get to 0 no matter which way you do it. You can brake as hard both ways and it will maintain the speed longer. You can coast as the cruise control does and where just throttling down would work before you might find it down shifting to increase the engine braking. Oh, here is one, I use to have a Honda back in 98 and I took the stock 22 pound flywheel off and put on an 11 pound one with a race clutch for some spray. If I used cruse control on the highway and it was flat everything was fine, but up and down hills (over passes are the only hills here) it would jerk forward and back as the old throttle inputs would sling the car around because the reduced mass doesn't maintain speed the same.

 

Most people don't do all highway driving, so this will not be useful, but if you have a car that spends 95% of the time on the highway you could gain from it. Keep in mind the higher ratio of sprung weight to unsprung weight equals comfort. As your unsprung weight gets closer to sprung weight you loose that riding on a cloud feeling. However almost no one does this and will benefit from lighter until it's jerky to drive.

Unsprung weight will never make your car jerky. A flywheel is rotating mass but it is not unsprung weight. Apples and oranges.

Mixing things up again. I was just warning that if you go adding heavier wheels you will reduce your ride quality. Nothing about that applies to the rest of that.

Best thing I have ever did to mine was a Custom Tune,He made it shift a whole lot better with changing the shift points,Fuel mileage increased,HP increased,It is a different animal.It was a huge difference and would not own another vehicle without a custom tune again.This is his info.good luck

I did that with my trinity and upload him the data. Lew is a good guy. He will really work with you.

Fine I was wrong it won't take less energy it would be equal once at speed with all other variables the same.

sorry I don't know how I read that as lighter wheels instead of heavier.

 

that's what I get for posting while working.

 

I agree that heavier wheels and tires have a negative impact on every aspect of the driving experience, including ride quality.

My 5.3 will do a burn out if I put the pedal down, but if I'm just tooling around it feels a bit sluggish.

 

The only time I really wish I had more power is passing on the interstate or cruising at highway speeds. I cant climb a hill at 70 without downshifting and staying downshifted for several seconds.

 

I test drove a few 6.2s, they were BEASTS had all the power I'd ever need in a truck.. but I coudln't get a non-loaded truck with a 6.2, and price forced me out.

 

If I won the lotto.. I'd trade mine in for a 6.2 for sure.

Your issues isn't the moto it is the gearing - 100%

Your gearing is most of the issue, hate to say it but that truck is not going to move in a hurry. A 5.3 engine with 3.73s will not feel much less than a 6.2 with 3.42s. Ive contended if the 6.2 is going to stay in the 1/2 tons they will have to open it up in other models. After initial waves buys them, I just dont see them selling enough of them to keep them in production.

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome. 
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
