trade in 5.3 for a 6.2?

Nobody mentioned tuning these trucks or adding headers- you guys do know that's possible right? I'm coming more from modding muscle cars- but the LSx series motors are very similar to what we have in our trucks, and I would guarantee a set of headers and a good intake/tune would net 30rwhp at the bare minimum, and it would feel/perform/drive like it picked up twice that just due to the improved shift pattern & removal of torque mgmt/pulled timing.

Again- just guesstimate, but I imagine you could get the nicest 304 stainless ceramic coated headers + intake + tune + install for around $2500

Something tells me you'd be out more than that trading it in at this point.

This is coming from a guy who swapped out a a 3.08 LTZ w/ 18s for a 3.42 equipped all terrain on 20"sw/ Z71 so take that for what it's worth.....

No dice on a tune not worth voiding the extended warrantee I got. I have a cat back exhaust and intake already was thinking maybe doing headers and hi flow cats but without tuning I doubt it'd be worth the cost and effort

Just wondering if anyone has traded in their 2014 w/ a 5.3l to a 6.2l engine. I love my truck and its absolutely perfect except for the lack of power. Im wondering what kind of costs I'm looking at for trading in my current truck for the same truck but with the 6.2l engine. Ive got 25000 Km's on it so far ~ 15000 miles.

Or has anyone gotten an engine swap done yet? That would be perfect for me but i doubt it will cost any less than 8-10k$

What axle ratio do u have. I traded in my 14 5.3 with 3.08 axle for a 14 5.3 with 3.73 axle. Crazy how motor did not have much to do with it. So much more powerful now. Geared much lower and handles bigger tires so well. Never downshifts climbing hills doing 65-75 on highway anymore. Where r u lacking power? In take off or at highway speeds?

22.5 mpg at 80+ mph with a 6.2 4wd? Dang, guess I messed up buying the 5.3. I just completed a road trip on flat roads and no wind to speak of. Best I could manage was 22 mpg, and that was doing 60 mph! Doing 80 on the interstate, I was getting approx 19.5 mpg. Towing my 5K lb travel trailer, I'm lucky to get 9 mpg on flat roads.

I wouldn't say you messed up bro. That was with Michelin ltx's, 93 octane, k&n filter. For some reason my mileage was best in PA, and New York, had a 50 mile run of 24mpg somehow.

I know I'm old and crotchety. But the mention of racing in the rain just sounds scary as hell to me. I just don't see much upside to street racing anymore. Definitely getting old. One thing about these trucks I've observed, they don't stop as well as they accelerate.

If you didn't have the extended warranty you could do the Edelbrock supercharger with their warranty. Then you get a lot of power and torque while keeping a warranty. Still could but it's only 100,000 miles.

Gears will help a lot for the money and keep your warranty. I'll probably switch to 3.73s myself, but for a year or so after my camaro is built up.

As for racing in the rain it's not like you run up to 100. Just launch and run out a couple gears leaving them spinning. No more dangerous than when some idiot cuts you off at random and you have zero control of that.

I've got 3.42 gears. Truck is an LZ2 package so I had the option to get the 6.2 had I not gotten it when I did as they didn't have 6.2's out yet. A supercharger would be a good idea but by the time my warrantee is done I'll be trading it in.

If gm doesn't void warranties on tuned/bolted (no cam although most of their techs wouldn't be able to tell lol) performance cars I doubt they would on trucks.

I had warranty work performed on my g8 GT that involved driveline (rear main seal leak) no issues with tune or headers.

You can always flash back to stock too FYI.

A manufacturer has to prove a tune caused the issue- and what issues are you going to have? Tranny? Shouldn't get effected by a conservative tune

I have been driving almost 44 years, Iv always had a performance car either as the wifes DD or my toy. Some of my early SS and Gt cars of the 70s- 90s didn't perform like these trucks with the 5.3 even with the 308 gear. My 94 Impala SS did a 15.50 stock in the 1/4 mile, my dog 5.3 does better. Car and driver said it was the second fastest Impala ever, the 427 SS was a bit faster, I could name more. I don't know what some of you young guys are smoking or drinking, performance is not the problem.

No your right, people say it will void the warranty, headers has nothing to do with sau your suspension. Now if you have engine troubles your shot. At the end of the day though if GM doesn fix it, they have more money and clout than you do and will probably cost you more to get the courts to make them fix it then to just fix it yourself. When you say prove, they dont have to prove it to anybody unless you take action on them.

In todays world, Personally if you mod it, you take the risk. Manufactures shouldnt try and find every loop hole they can to void a portion if not all of a warranty. But on the flip side they design and produce an item with certain specs in mind, and then warranty that. If something changes that design I can see where they shouldnt have to honor some or part of a warranty.

No manufacture has ever jumped on this, I know some dealers have and will warranty this stuff. I also know Gm sells some performance items in an aftermarket sense. But I always wonder what it would be like if GM offered true after market service such as installing headers, blowers, upgraded suspensions and such with a warranty. Just think of the possible money involved if say GM or ford says yeah come in and well throw headers on a blower, etc and it wont change your warranty. Face it most guys are not risking voidng a part or all of a warranty on a 40-50k truck

a truck will never compare with a car. a car will never compare with a motorcycle. If you want speed, go buy a gixxer. the 5.3 with a tune and some parts is way cheaper in the long run than trading in or trying to get a truck that competes with a camaro or corvette.

i have the 6.2 and get 19-22 mgp highway and 11-14 city. if it were me i'd keep the 5.3 and just add some parts to it.

i had a gixxer 600 that would smoke almost any street legal car made.

I used to think that way, but I realized a few things. First- life is short, might as well enjoy it to the fullest & if that means adding headers to your vehicle go for it. Second- I drive a lot 25-30,000 miles a year, not one of my vehicles ever had a drivetrain issue (and really that's what we're talking about here) south of 100,000 miles. That's why pretty much ALL manufacturers offer a 100,000 mile warranty- the quality is high enough from every manufacturer that lasting 100,000 without issue is not a concern for them. Lastly- high performance cars and trucks are built to withstand a certain degree of "abuse" by their very nature, but the vast majority of owners don't treat them that way, so the threshold for what the tranny/engine can take is quite high. For example my truck is rated to tow nearly 10,000 lbs, I will never tow that much nor do intend to- but I could every day and shouldn't have an issue.

So in the big scheme of things putting headers and a tune on the truck is really no big deal and should have no bearing on warranty or reliability.

Finally- I had LT headers no cats on my G8- not only did 2 different gm dealers perform different warranty work (at least one time relating to "drivetrain") without mention of the headers or they just said "sounds great" - and when I went to trade it in on my gmc truck they didn't say a peep- mind you it had been on their lift many times and you could smell the exhaust. Wasn't until after everything was signed and I went in for my first oil change in the truck that the salesman was like- "hey you know your car had no cats?" Hhahah

If this was not a first year motor I would be in it, but since it's not a proven motor yet I'll stay out of it for now. You are right that little things will not be an issue with a tune but a valve defect shows up and you are the first to drop a valve with a tune. You will likely be footing the bill on a motor most can't even buy when you only have one head left good and the rest could be junk. I will be in mine in a couple years, I'll probably be building them from the ground up soon also.

Your getting more out of the engine running E85, than you will get with a 93 can tune so I wouldn't sweat it. If you happen to get a bad engine well those are the breaks, I like to gamble and like my odds.

Risk vs Reward. Sure would suck to have a $10k you can't afford to get your new truck running. You are likely right and everything will be fine. Once I know every clearance and torque value to cost and risk will be almost gone.

I wonder how thick the sleeves are and how far they can be bored. The old 5.3 could be opened .100 but the old 6.2 can only go .020.
