trade in 5.3 for a 6.2?

Isn't a 5.3 gonna get like 14mpg with 3.73s tho? I'm getting high 18s now. I'm 4wd too so I've got 2 diffs I'd have to change out. That'd cost a pretty penny.

I still think if I were in a position to trade for a 6.2, it'd be smarter than trying to keep the 5.3. Even though I'm REALLY impressed with the direct injection 5.3s.

I don't think it would cost 10 to 15k for gears, if you can get E85 that will close the gap some.

i have the 5.3 with max tow and the 3.73 gearing. Im more of a semi agressive driver, not agressive but I dont putz. My average is just a little over 16. With some babying Im guessing it could be over 17. If you think about it a 1mpg better average over 12000miles a year is like a $150 savings a year.

yeah the 6.2 is good no doubt. But you put 3.42s in that truck it will be fine. Like I said earlier with 3.73 gearing im not so sure the 5.3 is that far behind a 3.42 geared 6.2

I agree. I went from a 5.3 with 3.08 2014 to a 5.3 3.73 2014 and have heavier aftermarket wheels with 33" tires. I'm getting 15-16 around town and 19-20 on the highway. Just running 87 octane with 10% ethanol blend. Same mileage is was getting in the 3.08 axle. But now a more powerful truck night and day. Love it

I think all the 5.3 owners that are lusting for a 6.2 should go as fast as they can to the dealerships and plop their money down (or sign their life away). The economy needs you. Do your duty. emoticon-0164-cash.gifpretty_please.gif

I really don't understand why GM bothered with the 3.08. You will not see a mileage difference worth noting between that and the 3.42s. You will get better mileage in town with the 3.42s and the truck will feel a lot better to drive with 3.42s as well. On to the engine differences, I have a 6.2 SLT that I use at work and it doesn't feel any different unless you push the silly pedal down atleast half way or more. There is definitely more power when you push it though. I'm not sure if many of you have actually modded or tuned your trucks, but from experience I can tell you that the 5.3 wakes up a lot with a few mods. My truck came with 3.08s and put down 303whp and 328lbft stock. I then did a custom diablo tune with E85 and it made 331whp and 361lbft. From there I put a comp cam (similar to a 228), some valvetrain goodies and hardware, American Racing 1-3/4 longtubes, East Coast Gear 4.10s, made my own exhaust, and tuned it on E47 with HP tuners. I now make 391whp and 407lbft. All in all I've got around 4 grand into the truck and my best run to date was a 12.93 @107.8. Now I understand that I'm a single cab short box, but even a crew cab with the same mods should do a 13.2-13.3 which is still very respectable. For the amount of money you would spend on trading in and upgrading to the 6.2, you could have an 11 second turbo truck (sinister race craft has run an 11.70 so far with a mild turbo build on a 14 silverado). With all that being said, I can muster around 19mpg on the highway and that's with the 4.10s, and E47 in the tank. So I'm around what a 6.2 would get for mileage and I would simply embarrass one from the lights or on the highway. To each thier own I guess, I'm just saying to weigh your options before doing it.

Im one of those people that trade every 2-21/2 years, I cant help it, I get really pissed if I don't. Im almost 59 still the same. I bought top of the line every thing in it once two years im looking again, you people that can go ten years go for it. I go for deals my Texas package was 29K loaded pretty good, I had it 10 months, im not underwater. I am a cheapo with every thing else. Thought about a lease couldn't do it. The 6.2 trucks are just too high for a person that trades as much as me, it could kick me to Ram you can get a hemi in anything.

Same boat. But I buy every 2-3 because its more cost effective. Many people get in this ill buy it and keep it forever. But run the math sometime. If you have a 10 year span more than likely you will buy two trucks in that span. Say each truck cost you 45, so over ten years you spent 90 grand on two vehicles. If I go out and buy/lease every 3 years or so. I will have three brand new trucks in a 10 year span. If my payment is around 500 a month. I spend 6 grand a year or 60 grand over 10 years. Thats a 30 grand savings over 10 years and I get one more newer truck. This doesnt factor in if I get a new truck every 3 years I have no MAINT payments beyond oil changes, NONE, shouldnt have to replace tires, breaks, etc. So think about the maint and upkeep on that truck after 4-5 years nearing 100k in miles. Even if you say ok Ill buy one truck and it will last me 10 years, so you spent 45k, and my method is 15 k more over 10 years. But that 15 margin starts skrinking when youve had to add two sets of tires to the mix, breakes, batteries, exhaust, and then things that just break.

Of course Im eating depreication and what not, but over 10 years I spent 60 grand. With a lease/loan, let the bank and lease companies share in that burden and let them deal with trying to selling and upkeeping an older truck. With the current price point in trucks, I dont see where it finanically makes sense to buy it, pay it off and keep it 10 years.

I like the way you think, Ill look hard at leasing.

I did my first lease this time. It was $140 cheaper a month to lease. You do have to watch miles, and make that a factor. My lease is 10 cents for every mile over. Which equates to 100 bucks for every thousand. But, BUT, do the math and look at the risk. Lets say I get a 12k mile lease for 400 and a 15k for 425. 25 bucks a month times 12 is 300 or 900 bucks over a 3 year lease vs if I got a 12k lease and paid the 10 cent penalty on 3k miles I would save 600 bucks still.

Its a big equation. Im not saying somebody is wrong, as every situation is different. But the idea of buying this vehicle and paying it off and keeping is antiquated.

so that doesn't wear off eh? I'm 33 and the longest I've owned a car is 4 years. I've owned nine vehicles since I started driving (so.. what.. 18 years?) so that averages to a new car every 2.

I like to have all the goodies, loaded.. but the last 2 trucks I have bought have been trimmed down. In both instances I've been trimming them back up with factory parts. This one though, I would have been better off buying a new one with the goodies I wanted cos the goodies are PRICEY.

I paid 32 for mine, but the mileage is up there for a "new truck" so I imagine I'd AT BEST break even. I'm probably under water on it.

I would have been looking at payments.. what.. $900-1200 a month.. for a 6.2 truck! That's just insane yall. I dont know how the folks that are doing it do it, unless they're dropping $20k down.

Case in point: a metallic brown High country, crew cab, 6.2, LTZ, MSRP of $56,xxx at Bill Holt Chevrolet. At the time I had this crazy idea that the govt was gonna seize IRAs, so I was looking to cash out and do $20k down on this truck. Dealer sat me down, said that WITH THE $20K DOWN I would be paying $750 a month for 72 months! (that doesn't add up at all mind you.. but it was enough to make me walk away. good thing too.. my IRA is still in-tact and the govt hasn't seized anything. When ya hang around with conspiracy theorists sometimes it wears off on you a bit..)

Since I buy every 2 years or so, I generally don't do anything down. It seems like cash outta my pocket that goes to nothing. $1000-2000 makes what.. $20 a month?

I imagine if I would go in right now and try to trade my truck in for a 6.2 several things would happen.

1. I would be looking at a trade in value PROBABLY of about $26k

2. The 6.2 would be in the 50s and would not come out, plus I'd be rolling $6k into the price on top of it.

3. My credit would be denied for too many inquiries, since I just bought this thing earlier this month.

I would LOVE to lease, but my problem is I'm kinda rough on vehicles, especially trucks. I'm a car nut so I'm always wrenching on something, my last truck I had for 2 years and hauled at least 2 LSx engines in the bed, towed at least 3 cars with it, there's a lot of "risk" in all that to scratching the leasing agency's truck. Plus now that I drive for a living, some days I'm 200 miles on the road (and other days, like today.. none!) so the 10k miles a year they assume would bite me HARD at turn in time.

they lease up 15k miles. And I have had friends lease, and have used their vehicle and no issues. They dont expect it to come back looking brand new. But dents and holes in seats, yeah your probably fixing it. Look im not saying a lease is the best option for everybody. heck getting a new car in general is not a good idea, but many do it, even some on this board and they know who they are. All I am saying is if you look at it holistically and from a dollars and cents mentality over a span of time, straight out buying a vehicle paying it off and driving it close to ten years, just doesnt work in the math department. Is my formula without risk or cons, no, but purely dollar for dollar over a 10 year span there is not an equation that I think of that makes sense to buy one and keep it.

My toys I keep longer, but I don't drive them every day. I learned a long time ago the only thing that worked for me was looking for deals. This 14 I bought on 12/31/13, saved 11K I never was under water. I have real good credit so I got 1.9% interest. Im dept free except for my truck and the wifes car. I own three house, two I rent out. My only vice are cars and trucks Ive had over 100 starting in the seventies. Some I made money on, very few boring cars. I owned 1 for a week end that's my record.

Nice. Were kind of on the same page. I keep toys longer and pay cash for those or take very small loans. I tend to shop and shop these hard, as I buy cheap and make money on most of them when I do get rid of them. I also do not like a payment on something like a toy for a few reasons. 1. Your paying interest on something that is highly depreciable, VERY. also depending on what you put down, but if you put if you do little to nothing on a loan on MOST toys you are underwater the whole time you have a loan. 2. If the toy is paid off I dont see it as invesment, but I see them as money I can use to have fun. I no longer want the toy or need cash I can sell it even if I have to drop to rock bottom on the toy, I get full cash for it without having to pay a bank off. Toys are a losing proposition in general, eventhough I have made money on probably 60% of my toys and only lost maybe 10-20% upon resale, between maint and general use I have lost money on all toys.
