I have a 1999 chevy silverado 1500 with a long bed that needs replaced. Will a long bed from a 2004 silverado 1500 bolt right in and will the tail lights work with the wiring harness?

^ haha soo very true. I'll be interested to see if it can swap over. I wouldn't bet all my money on it, that's quite a year gap. It'll be good to know though for the future.

Bed it identical. Your old harnesss and lights will go right in.

1999 was a split year. OBS vs. NBS.

Otherwise, if your on the correct "NBS" path, it will interchange. GMC's had a slightly different t/lamp socket than the Chevy's too. With a minor mod (via a razor blade) the t/lamps will ALL interchange!!

03+ tail lights plug right into 99-02 beds...

I also bet that its a direct swap.

Need the 03+ tail light harness or mod the 99-02 plugs

The 04 bed geometry is identical. The taillights interchange but have their own harness that plugs in under the bed in the center rear. I have 07 s in my 99. If you don't have the newer harness you need to notch the twist lock hole to use the older harness. I did that. 1 less bulb than the newer but insignificant small bulb

Definitely not identical.  Body lines are noticeably different, would also expect the frame mounting points and the overall width and length to be at least a little different as well,

As for close enough to make work, that depends entirely on your fabbing skills and what you will find acceptable.
