Poston Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 I recently purchased a set of rs racing g2 led headlight bulbs for my 14 silverado. They took a while to install and work great with the truck off. As soon as I start the truck they go off and will not come back on until it's turned off and the key is reset. I've noticed that some of you guys with hid headlights have had a similar issue and used something called error cancellors, is this my issue? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

ThanksIt's got to do with the drl. If the truck is off, the headlights are powered like they are when the switch is in the on position. When you turn it on, it defaults to drl mode which is pwm. Which is no Bueno for leds.

Basically to run your normal halogen headlights in a "low power" drl mode, it sends pulses of current to the headlight instead of a constant one. This essentially only powers the light in pulses (though be it extremely fast and unnoticeable in halogens). Since halogens take time to heat up to full brightness, this is basically heating then letting the filiment cool in microseconds and not allowing to to reach full brightness. What this means to HIDS and Leds is that they need a constant current to sustain an arc of plasma (in HIDS) and a constant voltage to power an led chip. This can be solved with a capacitor which is essentially a short term battery. It gathers the pulses of energy and releases them in a constant flow. Hope this helps, kinda long winded. Sorry

I bought an hid wiring harness kit that uses a relay that controls both LED light bulbs off of one. In other words it uses one plug that would normally plug into the back of a regular h11 bulb to tell the relay when to turn on and off and the relay gets power straight from the battery and sends a non pulsing flow of current through the harness that has 2 other plugs that plug into the ballasts, works like a charm.

In the future though, if you start getting a buzzing sound from the relay in your harness or flickering in the lights then you will need the capacitor. This is because the PWM is causing the relay to trigger off and on. If you do get this then simply plug the capacitor in between your harness and the plug you used to plug into your stock headlight. Should fix it.
