As I get close to 30k miles with my truck I would love to service the trans.

 

With there being no drain are there any tricks to dropping pan ? I can't see dropping it successfully without spilling it all over the place.

How much fluid will I need if I drop the pan and filter ?

Check owners manual for refill capacity

 

Sometimes the exh is in the way , others should be able to confirm

I was able to get the pan off and out without any problems. The gasket is reusable, I got my filter "kit" from GM.

How do you guys drain with no "drain plug"?

 

Tricks ? tips ?

It's pretty simple.

 

You remove all the bolts for the pan on the transmission, then remove it, clean it [you may or may not have a reusable gasket on it, if you do, reuse it instead of using the cheap one that comes as part of the filter kit], unscrew transmission filter, clean it's gasket surface [you may have to check that the seal it uses hasn't come off and is stuck in the transmission, if so, make sure you get it out before installing new one]. Install new filter, then reinstall pan and torque bolts to appropriate value, and fill with transmission fluid.

 

Hints, tips:

1) get a container that is larger than the pan

2) unbolt and remove all the bolts from one side of the pan, then each end, then loosen the bolts on the final side. when they are loose, break the pan free from the transmission [if it doesn't come apart on it's own] so most of the fluid comes out on the one side. and make sure the container is primarily under that side. continue loosening the last bolts so the pan tilts more and more [so more fluid comes out. then move the container a little out of the way, lift up and hold the pan against the transmission and remove the final bolts and then lower and dump the last oil from the pan manually
