A bad coolant temp sensor would most likely set the check engine light off. The location is probably on the driver side block. If you have access to a diagnostic scanner, you might try what "oldscsc" recommended above, or at least stop by advance auto or one of the part stores and borrow their scanner if you don't have one to see if any codes are stored. You may want to pull the distributor out and check it to see if the gear is worn. Your description of the problem sounds exactly the same as mine was.

I have thought about doing that a few times. I may take it out tomorrow and check it. I heard it was tricky because you have to align something up so it fires correctly.

You just need to make sure you that when you put it back in, that it's in exactly the same position as when you took it out. Use a marker or nail or something to mark the flange of the distributor and the engine before you take it off.
