Paint Policy

So I was cleaning my truck this weekend when I noticed a rust spot in the hood of my truck.

 

Will GM Re-paint my truck because of this?  I've only had the truck 3 months......... ???  ???

??? But my hood catch (the metal piece attached to the hood) is rusty from the paint rubbing off

 

Where is it rusting?

It's rusting on the passenger side roof, about 4 inches towards the center of the truck.......

 

Looks like a rock pit with the rust right in the middle of the pit.....  How could I throw a rock on the roof, and we've had no hail.........

Usually the corosion protection is only for rust-through.  But if you talk to your dealer and maybe get a zone rep involved, something may happen.

If your dealer is a good guy he may fix it for you...

 

I tried to get the dealer to fix the paint on my car once, but he said it was acid rain, and GM wouldn't stand behind it.

 

On the bright side though, GM did recognize a paint problem on the late 80's trrucks and vans, (mainly Light blue/silver/white), and they repainted them up to 5 years old regardless of the miles...  so maybe something is up with the new trucks and GM will stand behind it.  I'd at least make note of it at the dealer...

Thought I would throw down a update............

 

Took the truck in Yesterday to the dealer to have them look at the paint spot and the body shop admitied that it was a paint  flaw and covered  under waranty.  However...........

 

They will only re-paint the roof of my truck.  I was hoping to get the entire truck painted due to the fact that it hapened on the roof why wouldn't it hapen somewhere else?

 

If they re-paint the truck do they take all the decals/badges off the truck to paint it?  I wonder if I could get them to leave them off after they paint it?  We'll I guess I will sit back and see what hapens, I take the truck in Monday to get it painted........  I'll still try to post that pic.

COWBOY....They prob. will only paint the roof and will

want $$$ to do the rest.  Heck NO they won't pull off

the decals etc.........  If they tape the roof off at the seam

lines like they should.  You will never notice the repaint

on the roof.  If they just spot paint and blend roof......

I would have a problem with that.  Cuz a couple years

down the road with the sun beating on it it will stick

out liks a sore thumb.   Just talk to the body shop

mgr. NICELY and they will do it YOUR way !.......geo

 

A couple boxes of doughnuts and a case of soda will

make the body shop crew HAPPY !  Thus a better job!

if they are repainting the whole truck they will (they better) pull off all decals.  When I had the pass side bed repainted they removed the bed rail caps, Z71 sticker, mudflap, tire, fender flare, rear bumper, and trim piece that is on the side

You might want to be careful about having them re-paint it.  When I bought my Yukon in 2000, there was a dimple on the roof passenger side about 4 inches in (weird.. similar to where  yours is).  They offered to re-paint it, and it came back looking terrible.  It was rough (seemed kind of like overspray), and was very slightly discolored.  I was so pissed I couldn't bear to bring it back to them to have them try to fix it.  I just left it and luckily I only see it when I wash the truck.  still makes me mad.  Plus, nothing is as good as having the paint baked on like they do at the factory.  If you could do something less major, I'd try to do it -- maybe get a bottle of the paint that mathes your color and just drop a bit of paint on the spot?  I don't know if that would solve rust problems, though.

Yeah I'm always worried about paint jobs but this will be the 3rd time I've had the local GM Dealer here in town paint a truck for me.  The've done a good job in the past with the spots they've fixed.  I'm hoping I can get them to do the entire truck that way they will fix the scratch marks my log left in it also.

Any good dealer will stand behind a car they sold.  Especially if you are a repeat customer.  I had a 2000 Neon before my Tahoe and I was the pickiest little sob I could be.  They replaced the E- Break handlr because the button was sticking out to far.  When they did that they scratched the leather on the Automatic leaver.  Then a few weeks later I noticed that my rims were starting to pit.  Well I showed them and they took it in and tried to clean them with there super duty cleaner and it didn't help so they ended up replacing all 4 wheels.  Then the clear coat had started to peal around the wiper nozzles.  So they repainted my hood.  Then I noticed the same thing around the door handles.  Well My warenty had ran out at that point and they made it clear that I was S.O.L. but it was so minor you only saw it when you were getting the wax out of the cracks.  But I was shocked that they took my bickering.  I did bring them Dunkin Donughts and coffee and they were like babies in a candy store.  So you should be in good hands there.  I think if you came up with a good debate as to why you want the whole thing painted and really stand behind your reason they should agree to it.  Good luck and let us know how you make out.

We'll I got the truck back last night from the shop and here is how it went down...

 

I followed some great advice here on the forum and took the guys at the shop a dozen donughts on Monday morning.  Told them to check it all out and test the paint.  They called me on At about 11:00am Tuesday morning to say the truck was done and that they just painted the roof.  Didn't see any issues with the paint on the rest of the truck.  So I asked if he noticed the scratches on the truck (This was the whole reason I was trying to get the truck re-painted was to cover them up) He said "Ya I saw thoose and wondered what happened"  So I asked him if he thought they could buff thoose out and he said ya sure no problem.  So I asked him what it would cost me and he said "Well you brought us donughts so we'll send her back in and do it for free"

 

End result truck looks great and I'm a satisfied customer.  I guess you still can get a good deal with Sugar and not have to be a dick!!
