14/15 silverado - adding foglights

Are you talking about essentially bypassing the bcm by putting a switch on the after-bcm-wires? The BU/GY wires run from the foglight switch to the X1 connector on the BCM. The factory switch is 6 pin and has a "5v reference" line. Nowhere in the upfitter manual does it show a 12v signal being sent to the factory switch, so we assumed that the foglight switch itself was a 5v switch and that having a 12v signal sent to it may be detrimental.

 

Our original plan before we noted that was to use BU/GY and BK to close the flip flop. However the flop flop module I'm using is polling on 12v, so.. it'd be sending 12v trough the switch (and grounding through BK) when we made the contact. Since the switch would still be used for the other headlamp functions I was concerned that the BCM may get "confused" by having a sudden 12v ground going through the ground on BK, or worse, that it may wind up damaging the BCM and costing me some down time (and a tow to the dealer.)

 

What I'm doing right now is looking at the factory 4wd trim panel that has the trailer brake switch box. The panel itself is about $13 plus shipping. It's on the way, so I haven't been updating until I have something to really present.

 

My idea is to either use a factory switch out of another car that is 12v, MO NO, or a rocker NO switch and just removing the flip-flop entirely.

 

I agree with you on the indicator, which is why I'm thinking I'll be pulling the feed to the switch from the RAP module rather than from the battery. It may not be an issue at night but if I bump the switch during the day and turn my fogs on.,. I may wind up with a dead battery by EOD if I'm not careful. By coming right off the battery I'd be circumventing all the rundown protections GM has put into the truck. RAP is monitored by the BCM and would shut it down.

 

Power for the fogs would still come off the battery.

 

I'd still love to use the factory foglight switch, but I haven't found a way to do it. There are electrical engineering forums and things that talk about switching 12v with a 5v signal but it gets to where its all gibberish to me and requires bead boards or pcbs, logic circuits, microprocessors.. it starts to get really complicated just to use the switch I want, when I can just find another switch and be done with this. (It also becomes exponentially more expensive.)

 

One thing I did look at was the southern comfort reaper and blackwidow trucks.. they actually make a switch console that goes into the factory cubby pocket in the top left of the truck above the switches. The problem is they wont sell it to me. I've called about 3 places. They say no BW or Reaper vin, no switch panel. So.. thats a no go on that angle. Too bad too.. it looked great and had slots for 2 switches, so you could run a light bar and something else if you wanted to.

Reading through the comments I saw you used my video to help you remove the bumper cover . I'm going to be changing my bumper for one with Foglights but I'm going to use led pods instead of the stock halogen fogs. Thanks for the part numbers.

how do you plan on wiring them? wireless relay ? what kind of aftermarket foglights are you looking into? should be interesting to see what you come up with.

 

If anything, it'd make me keep my truck for another year or two lol.

I already have led pods mounted to my bumper with a relay, so after I get the bumper and fog light housing etc I'm going to just mount the 4 new led pods to those same wires. Total cost I'm looking at $300 with bumper, fog light brackets, and led pods.

Yup all the center pieces from my stock bumper can be used on this one but I'm going to order the piece that has the recovery hooks cut out. Is only $45 or so, since mine I had to cut it to add them lol. I want it to look original.

If you're going from non fog light bumper to one, Then yes you need the buckets and bezel even if your doing led pods on them.

Most people who can afford them, rigid dot approved pods. Most who can't, eBay amazon leds. Not bad for the money. Haven't had any of mine go bad.
