14/15 silverado - adding foglights

Thanks! As soon as I saw that you reminded me of something I honestly hadn't thought of. (I kind of assumed it was there but.. you know what they say about people who assume.)

So I immediately went out to the truck and popped the fuse panel box and looked for the foglight fuse.

The panel desgiantes it as #49. As you can see from the other pic, my truck has the tiny little 15a fuse.

I did not see a relay in this for foglights, or even a mention of one in the diagram. This has me a bit concerned that my diagram may be truck specific. As you can see from the shot here, there's a lot of slots for other relays that I do not have:

Edit: I just figured out that upftr 1-6 relays are "upfitter" relays. Surely GM did not use an "upfitter" slot (commonly for fleet and emergency apparently) for foglights?? I see no mention in the manual about a fog lamp relay, but it serves to question.. one must exist, it's not a direct hard wire from the battery to the switch to the lights. That'd be absurd.

I did some digging and found Spurshot's post here: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/162734-foglights-on-with-high-beams/?p=1476822

about keeping the fogs always on. I crawled under my dash and found that I do have the blue wire as seen in his shots, so that's good. I took a pic but all you'll see is blurry color, so I'll save it. I can take a pic later if needed.

Still no sign of the relay, but all the other components are there it seems.

If its wired as factory it absolutely needs BCM programming, we can handle that though.

Why would this need to be unlocked in the BCM? If there's no switch and no fog lights, no forward lamp harness, why would they go out of their way to turn it off in the bcm too?

Well, The purpose of this project is to use factory parts to keep the factory warranty so that the truck remains "unmodified" but still has the options I want it to have.

If I can find out where the foglight relay is, confirm that the bcm is the ONLY problem.. I can go to the dealership and have them activate it.

I'm planning to add remote start to the truck eventually as well. (it has RPO AQQ, so I know it has RS prep) So they can do that too. I'm still debating ordering projector headlights as part of this project since I have to tear the entire front end down for the forward wire harness.

I got news today that the foglights have shipped. They're expected to arrive in 2-3 days, but we got 1/4" of snow today and we're supposed to get 3" tomorrow. (I know.. but this is GA.. and people are skiddish because of what happened last year) so the mail didn't run. They alone wont do me much good anyway, but I can at least get some pics of em on here.

From what I can find there should be a Relay KR- 46 Front Fog Lamp Relay (T96). GM part # 19116962 is a multi purpose 4 pin relay that should work. Same as the one marked 8430 in your pic.

Yea but.. where is it?? Is it under the hood? where does it go? There's no mention of a fog lamp relay in the panel, only the fuses and 1-6 "upfitter" relay slots.

It should be in the block under the hood. I'm considering making my own harness with a relay wired in. The more I think about it I'm pretty sure that's how the wiring harness was with the fog light kits for the 07-13 GM trucks.

I'm tempted to make my way to a dealership and ask them to pop the cap on the fuse panel for a truck that has the fogs already there.

Anyone here (who probably won't be popping into a thread like this cos they have the fogs already) want to help me out with a photo or 2?

Oh, side note, amazon has the cheapest remote start so far. $189 shipped! plus an hour of labor from your dealer, not too shabby. I'm trying to build my 2nd order and they're dinging me for like ~$240 for the remote start on newgmparts!

Gonna get the forward lamp harness, probably pass on projectors.. I've seen shots on here of GMC owners with projector headlights and I'm sorry but.. that just wont cut it. I need LIGHT! That frees up $400 tho for.. other things. :)

I do have the wiring harness, part # 23109810, but preliminary checks under my SUV appears that won't work, without something else. Would that be where a different forward wiring harness would come in?

From the GM parts folks I've spoken to, there are 4 components to wiring all this up in the front of the truck.

1. forward wiring harness (23124556) this connects your headlights, turn signals, washer fluid bottle, and some other stuff to the truck and provides the output connector that leads into the bumper harness.

2. bumper harness (23109810) which provides connections for the foglights. This PN has no sensors, there's another PN for the one that includes the proximity sensors for park assist and tailgating or whatever that option is..

3. "Connector" (19168034) which connects #2 above to the fog lights. Why do we need this?? Why can't the harness go directly to the fogs? I dont know yet. When I get my harness and fogs we'll look and find an explanation here.

4. fogs themselves.

The harnesses are about $100-150 each and require pretty major disassembly to put in. We're swapping out the whole front of the truck basically. (frankly, if you could find a way to wire all this to an aftermarket switch somewhere, you'd save yourself a bundle, but I want this to be "factory." )

You also need the switch (23187804)

everything else LOOKS to be there except I can't find the relay. The BCM wiring is there, the fuses are in the fuse panel in the engine bay.

Ordered the forward lamp harness today.

the fogs would have arrived today but apparently the mail isn't running today. We've got about 1/2" of snow on the ground but its coming down in buckets, I guess they panicked. All the same.. I worked remotely today too.

Called newGMparts.com today and checked in on the order. He said one of my bezels was in a warehouse in michigan and it should be shipping out from rhode island in the next day or 2. From there it's about 3 days, so next week we should see every one of these parts.

ordered the forward harness from GMPD, they have 10% off shipping right now.

and since I decided NOT to buy projector headlights, I used that money to order myself a center console. :D

So the foglights arrived.

These were $42.99 from ebay and are "spyder" branded.

Iphone 5c for comparison in size. They're quite small! They have an 880 bulb in them.

The wire object in front of it is their version of the "connector." So that saves me about $100 for those too! Not every fog light kit will come with these and frankly, I dont like the quality of these, they look...fragile. But I'll hook em in when I can.

NewGMparts STILL has not shipped my parts ordered on the 18th.

newgmparts keeps saying "its shipping today or tomorrow."

I'm just gonna hafta suck it up and be patient. Yall know how bad the anticipation can be!

Even if I get those parts, I got 1 more coming from GMPD thats still "on order" too for the forward lamp harness, so.. even though I may be able to put it all together in front of the bumper, I wont be ready for the full install for at least a week.

That being said, if the bmc really does need to be unlocked or whatever to enable these, they won't work anyway.. at least not until I have the dealership unlock em. (I would rather not dig the bcm out from under the dash. Plus I kinda need my truck..)

I considered getting some 880 LEDs from vled. I'm not sure if they'll fit with that huge heat sink, but I kinda figure.. lets just see if I can make them work *at all* first, and then we'll worry about making them brighter or more useful.
