Most bed weight

I've got a load of hardwood flooring coming in and want to hear your opinions about if I can haul it in my truck or not.

I've got an '03 2500HD shortbox crew-cab.  The palet is 4'Wx3'Hx7.5'L and the weight comes in at a little under 2500 pounds.  I know that above the advertised limit, but wanted to know what everyone thought about it.

I'd prefer to not take my trailer down for this as I don't think the capacity of the trailer is any higher than the truck....plus, I bought a big truck and wanna use it :jester:

Anyway, lemme know what you think.

Thanks,

Brett

Wait...maybe I misread.  According to the chevy website, my truck's curb weight is 5892.  So 9200-5892 means that I can put 3308 pounds in the bed (also jiving with the chevy website).  I must have been looking at the wrong numbers before.  Lemme know if I'm right.

BTW...seeing as how I can put 3308 pounds in the bed of my truck...what exactly makes this a 3/4 ton truck?  Last I check 3308 pounds is well over 1.5 tons....so WTF??

Thanks in advance,

Brett

I would not be concerned at all about hauling that relatively light load(for an HD).If it makes you feel any better last week I hauled 5200lbs of shingles in the bed with a 12,000 trailer hooked to the back other than being slow at takeoff(compared to my Dmax)8.1 HD,it did just fine.Your truck might squat 2 inches max in the rear. :jester:

:thumb: Funny you should ask this question. Two weeks ago I hauled 675 Sq ft of Brazilian Cherry hardwood with no problems. Truck rode great and hardly knew the load was there.

Sweet :jester:  Can't wait to do it actually.  About time I actually utilize the HD aspect of the truck instead of just the Crew-Cab aspect :jester:

t-76y2kss - That's some pretty serious hauling, glad it did ok.

GMC2500HDCC - Was looking at some Brazilian Tigerwood myself as I love the look...but it just wasn't worth the extra $$.  I got the red oak for only 3.20/sq. ft.  Can't beat that price.  Do you put your cherry down yet?  That's another of my favorite woods.

Thanks again,

Brett

I'll bet I know who's gonna chime in real soon. And his post will have a link to a blue truck with a bed full of stones. Anyone wanna give me odds on who it is?  :jester:  :jester:

Hullie I have towed as much as 20,000lbs with this truck the new HD are a huge improvement over the old c/k style, brakes and suspension wise.Power is their to tow huge load just want to leave alot of room in front in case you have to get on the binders hard, dont want to smash any civics.Your HD will tow or haul anything you want. :jester:

My 2500HD has scaled @ 10,500, truck only... Had 60 PSI in the air bags, and 65 PSI in the 285's. No problem. 3750# in the box. 30 80# bags of Sackrete, and a bunch of paver stones.

Do you have a long box? The reason I ask is, how did you get 5200 lbs. of shingles in the box. Pallets can only hold about 16 square considering they are 250lb./square shigles. That is only 4000 lbs.

GM has disregarded the traditional meaning of 1500, 2500 and 3500. My last truck was a fairly stripped 1500 'half ton' it had a payload of about 1500 lbs. My nieghbor has the towing package that pushes the payload over 1800 lbs. (this is from memory). The 1500HD has a weights real close to the 5900 lbs you mentioned for the 2500HD. It has a gross weight of 8600. 8600-5900=2700 lbs. A 'half ton' with a payload of over one ton. Go figgur.

By the way, that weight should give you the smoothest ride you have had in your truck.

I have no idea of who you're talking about!   :nono:

But just for sh*ts and giggles....5,000lbs of gravel.

I grew up to use a truck as a truck and if you wanted to haul something then do it. My dad had a 64 short bed step side half ton with a straight six. Now this isn't a hauler but I can remember him loading it with sand, (we brick cased our house) and that thing would sit on the axle with all that weight. Needless to say he had 8ply tires on it for just that reason so he could haul weight. The truck didn't do bad for what it was and he really used it. His friend, (who owned a garage) always wondered how my dad got away without trashing the wheel bearings in that truck. If it wasn't sand then it was  loaded as much as it could hold with brick, or cement block or gravel.  Luckly he never got checked by the law. I would figure a nice fine for over the weight limit. :nono:

It did ride it's best when loaded, nice and smooth, oh and some seriously light steering wheel feel.
