Vinyl Wrap CHEVY Bowtie Emblems

Recommended Posts

I have searched and read a lot of threads but didn't find what I needed so here we go... I want to Color match my Bowties for My Ruby Metallic LTZ... I like the http://www.americanbrotherdesigns.com/product_p/abd-1401igce.htmBowtie replacement but the price of $140 has me searching for other options... I found this Vinyl Wrap on ebay that is Color Matched http://www.ebay.com/itm/DIY-Chevy-Bowtie-Emblem-Decal-Fits-Silverado-2014-/281742449922?var=580747103047&hash=item4199289d02&vxp=mtr for $10... Seems like a DYI but after looking closely at the OEM Gold Bowties I need help/thoughts around some tricky areas.. See photo below.. Do you see any issues with the Vinyl covering the Textured portion and secondly, wrapping the lowered 1/8" to 1/4" border around the raised textured portion...

I am also open to other cheaper than $140 suggestions..

Thanks

I didnt think that the Vinyl would work on the bumps of the OEM badge. But I don't know that for certain, just thought I read that somewhere.

There is this option too, from ebay. Painted to match. I asked them, and they will paint the chrome surrond if you request it as well.

Vinyl works good stick it on push it into all the corners real easy with a credit card or something of that sort and trim around it with an exacto or small razor blade! I power washed mine and everything when I had vinyl on my emblems never had any issues

I see quite a few people online/youtube that have used the vinyl stickers but i was skeptical of it lasting over time. If for some reason it came off would have to buy another.

Id go with plasti dip, if you can match your specific color. But maybe you cant which is why youre looking for other options. Plasti dip is a $10 deal, just takes about a cpl hpurs depending on how many coats you do. Plus you can re-do if for some reason it comes off, or you mess up or something

I vinyl wrapped my emblems recently and found this video to be the most helpful.

I also used a hair dryer while smoothing the wrap to get a stronger bond.

Take it slow while cutting the excess with the razor blade, especially around the corners.

In regards to wrapping the lowered 1/8" to 1/4" border around the raised textured portion...

You are completely right about this being a tricky part. I had to redo my front wrap because I cut where the lower part begins, not where the real edge is. The second time, I pressed the edges in harder with a credit card and took my time cutting and it went fine.

Here was my outcome

Thanks for the information on the Video and your tips... I am going to give this a try...

Use some 3m vinyl adhesive on the textured part and it should be fine.

Is this adhesive separate from the vinyl I will be installing? If so, what is it? a Spray?

Thanks guys...

That looks awesome. I might be peeling my plasti dip on my rear emblem and trying this out to see if can match the carbon pattern on my tailgate.

im thinking about doing this mod also....does anyone know how the textured bowtie takes the vinyl??

im thinking it must not be smooth? does the texture part come through?

Can't really see the texture with the carbon fiber but if you run your finger on it you can feel it. Haven't had any issues with mine in about a week since install.

Thanks

Well I did it... Took about 20 minutes total including cleaning/drying both emblems prior to installation... Bought a new exacta knife from Home Depot that worked great... I love how it came out and for $13 total and only 20 minutes, I am very Happy... The Color matched Vinyl is damn near perfect in color and was sticky so I wound up not using any additional adhesive... The hardest part was the original stick on the emblems because the vinyl was only like 1/4" wider than the emblem where the height was a full inch higher... Had to pull back off and re-align a couple of times... Turned out that the textured part of the emblems is still visible through the vinyl but isn't perfect... In other words, the textured part isn't the same across the emblem and in direct sun light, creates a different shine... If I had known prior to installation, I could have done a better job but I don't think you can get it perfect...

Added tip: Another tip I thought of is, to hold off trying to get the 1/8" lowered smooth border around the Higher textured part to look perfect until after you trim around and remove the access Vinyl... Once it's removed than you can put more pressure in this border area to get it right without putting to much stress in the tight edges/corners of the higher area...

Hope this helps
