Bad bearing or cvj?

So this morning going to church my front driverside wheel was making a little grinding noise. Nothing loud, just csubtle enough a tuned in driver might hear it. Coming home however the noise became a chirp and a periodic grind around corners. Jacked up the front when I got home and the wheel was hot. Checking it out more the wheel would not go forwards but would move back freely for a few inches then forward the same amount then stop. I tried grabbing at 12 and 6 and shaking it but there was no movement, but there was some at 3 and 9. The odd part is I could get tire spinning but I had to force it the whole way and it would grind, then lope a small amount. Feels like there is symptoms of both a cvj and bearing going out. Question in all this being, what are signs/symptoms of bad bearing vs. Cvj. And what's you guess, I dropped it off tonight and should know tomorrow.

If there is much play between the CV inner/outer and the shaft, then the CV is definitely toast... A bad wheel bearing will usually be easy to wiggle or be rough. My guess would be wheel bearing.

There is no noticible play, also the boot is intact with no leaking grease. My guess is bearing as well but the loping and relativly inconsistent grinding made me think twice. But the heat makes me lean toward bearing.

Another vote for the bearing and hub assembly. Replaced drivers side at 110K, passenger side will hold for a while yet. A real pain to replace yourself, but doable.

Just in case, check the passenger side as well. There has been cases where the noise is from one side and the other side is where the problem ends up being. Another vote for wheel hub bearing.
