Double Cab vs. Extended Cab?

How do those with newer trucks like the rear doors on the '14 and newer "double cab" vs the '13 and older "extended cab" suicide rear doors? I'm guessing it's nice to be able to open the rear doors without having to open the fronts. Any other advantages, disadvantages, or opinions?

Double cab: Safer cab due to B-Pillar (biggest reason for the switch), passengers getting in don't have to wait for you to open the front doors to get in, easier in parking lots next to cars to get in and out of.

 

Ext. cab: wider loading with both doors open.

 

Having owned a 2012 ext. cab, I didn't care for the door configuration.

Way better than my 07 was. Especially for letting people in/out without having to open the front doors.

I never owned one of the "suicide door" extended cabs, but a friend has one. The new ones are much quieter, seems to be fewer rattles than I hear in his truck.

The only upside IMO of the double doors is loading stuff in the back when parked next to other cars. The downside to me is that there seems to be less room compared with my 2002 ext. cab and you can't easily wedge in large items like you could with the suicide door configuration. After being in the old style extended cab for over 12 years I still catch myself trying to open the back door by trying to find a handle near the front door!

One thought for those of you with kids. The short doors are great for not whacking the cars next to you in parking lots. No longer a concern for me!

We have a 99 Sierra extended cab and GM is buying back our 14 Silverado double cab. (We chose a 15 CC for our replacement) With the DC you can't fit crap in the back. The door opening is WAY too small to put even a small end table. My 6 year old daughter can barely squeeze in between the front seat and hers to get in. With the EC you can push the front seat forward and fit way more. Now, the in parking lot the DC is way easier. When you're up against another car, trying to open the EC back door is a real pain in the rear.

Yes I have 2 little one to load up in car seats I have a 2014 double cab. the shorty doors are great! can open them wide open with out fear of hitting other car parked next to you.

 

On that note, the rear grab handles on hinder a lot of space to enter and exit

We really don't have a problem with the size in the back. We have 3 kids, 7, 10 and 13. The 13 yr old was 12 when we went shopping and when she got into a CC she said "Wow dad, what are we supposed to do with all of this" while pointing at the (what seemed like) 2' between her legs and my back seat.

 

That pretty well made up my mind. The CC, while CLEARLY more comfortable in the back, it's just too big, and most definitely too costly. Add in the loss of the bed space, no brainer for me anyway. But, to each his own. Still, I've never once had a kid complain about the room, nor has it seemed like it was too tight. I do wish the middle console didn't extend quite so far back as it really cuts into the leg room for the middle kid. So that's where we stuck the 7 yr old

 

To me, DC = way cheaper, short doors are benefit in parking lot, no worries of kids whacking cars, larger bed, and sufficient space. And personally I like the looks a tad bit more. Done deal.

A little bit, yes. And the B pillar seems a bit too wide at the bottom. Shoes bump into it every single time. But I do like the handles. Ultimately I think they help getting in.

I had a 2011 ext cab and now have a 2014 dbl cab...I prefer the ext cab when loading and the dbl cab for the times I have passengers in back. I have stuff in the back more often than passengers so overall I miss the suicide doors. That said, I do like the added protection that the B pillar gives so I guess in the end its a wash.

I was also worried about getting the DC due to leg room cause I plan on keeping my truck awhile though I don't have kids you never know what the future will bring lol my fiance is about 5'1 or a little taller and her and her mom fit in the back just fine with plenty of room I would rather have more bed room than leg room and if we need more leg room space I guess she gets a Tahoe or something cause I'm not giving up my DC lol

I traded my dc for the cc and its a big difference I found the double cab much less comfortable however like most it is defenilty less expensive and gm is working their in the right direction but still double cab is still lacking for me I do miss the bed well at least it is an option in the crew cab

I don't think the DC or CC come in 8' bed so that rules them out for me. Hopefully my 2011 Ext cab holds up until an 8' bed is available. We mostly use the rear seat area for cargo and looking at the new DC it appeared it would be much less capable for that. The extended cab is a little noisy so that is downside to it.

Had an 01 Extended cab. I rode in the backseat of it (I am a large guy) with no real issues. Rode in the back of a 2015 DC and found it very uncomfortable. Purchased a CC.
