bad coolant temp sens

so i was driving to work the other day and my temp gauge would all of a sudden go nuts and flip around for a second before it shut the truck down. is this a common problem with nbs 1500s or does my 99 have unique issues? regardless for now (payday is friday) i just unplugged the sensor and the problem stopped. i have no gauge now but i will be fine without one for awhile, my truck always runs the same temp regardless of any conditions (i've tried every mix of coolant, type of coolant, and full on water before, no difference really)

What I have expirenced with my 2010 is stock gauge is a dummy. Have to plug in an aftermarket reader if I wanna see the real temp.
