Looking for truck bed tool box ideas - Post Pics

What do you guys have or what have you used in the past for tool boxes? I'm still up in the air about one because with the short bed, it would take up useful space, but I'm tired of having tow strap, tool box, seat cover, etc. sliding around under my back seat. If I got a tool box I'd really like it to be a low profile box and preferably black.

 

I guess another question I have is are most or all tool boxes easy to put in and take out? So if I need the full length of the bed and need to take my box out, would that be a painful process? Does having the box in there take up or block the front tie down loops?

 

Can you guys post up any recommendations or pictures of what you've got so I can take a look. It would be much appreciated!

This is not intended to be critical by any means, but this is why my mind cannot grasp the concept of the short box. I've had several dealers look at me funny when I insist that I want the 6.5 box and that nothing else will do. It just seems so limited.

 

That being said, I am looking at a concealed box that sits beneath the tonneau. Something like the Personal Caddy from Fold-A-Cover. I think someone else makes one too. It allows for some clearance underneath if you are hauling longer material like plywood or 2xs, and it is secure, assuming you have a locking, hard tonneau. I do not have one to offer personal experience, but this is what I am considering.

Yea I hear you on that. I've never had a tool box and really never thought about getting one, but with the dog and kids coming soon I think the more space inside the truck the better.

 

Thanks for the info though. I'll look into that one as well. I don't have a tonneau and dont ever plan on getting one, so I just need to make sure whatever I get is secure

The silver box is the GM box that came with the bed rails - transferred over from my 08. I keep everything to one side so I can still load my motorcycle and close the tailgate.

Not a bad idea. I think I'm still looking for a box that goes against the cab though.

 

Does that box mounted on the bed rails slide at all? Or is it physically mounted to that location?

It latches onto the bed rails at any location you want. There is a handle inside the box that locks it into place, you can move it forward or back on either side of the bed.

The cargo management systems are still available and they will fit the new bodies.

i dont have an picture of just the box, but the box does not go all the way down to the bed floor. there is about a 1' gap. This is a UWS low profile box. i had a tractor supply one on my old truck and that thing was junk. ive had this one about a year and i have no issues.

 

EDIT: i have tow straps, tie downs, 1 ton jack, cables and some misc tools in the box with plenty of room to spare.

Also, I see you have a strap around the box. I take it there is no locking mechanism that comes with the box to keep it in place?

It's really light, and isn't a bother to remove or install, but I've needed to loctite the bolts. The front tie downs are still accessible.

 

I figure if I decide to add a bed cover, I can just add some rubber spacers to lift the sides.
