About to install AMP Powersteps....any tips or pointers?

I bought a used set off of a member here and it didn't come with the plug and play kit. I don't want to deal with removing door panel and hardwiring to the truck so I'm going to order the Plug n Play conversion kit. Seems pretty straight forward looking at the directions. Those of you that have installed it, did the instructions do a pretty good job at explaining things? Any additional info you could offer?

I installed my steps myself and it was a breeze (I used the plug and play kit as well). Just follow the instructions step by step and you should be golden.

All in all i think the install time was about 3 hours give or take (includes assembly time for the motor and arms). Granted, i did cut the led lights that came with the steps off and installed a set of LED light bars instead (They're brighter) so that took a little extra time.

You're going to love them by the way. They're one of the best purchases for my truck i have made.

Thanks for the info Tim. I've wanted a set of these since the day I bought my truck. Just didn't want to pay for them lol. Found a good deal and pulled the trigger. My motor is assembled. All I need to do is get my Plug n Play conversion harness in and mount the steps.

I have never been a big fan of the lights that come with the kit. They look very blue/purple. I had planned on putting a different set of lights in there anyway. Were you able to use the wiring that came with the lights? My plan is to cut off the ones on there now and put some better/brighter looking ones under there.

Yes, you can use the same wiring. I literally just cut the light off and then soldered the new lights to the existing wiring and heat shrink-ed the connection.

I used a set of COB lights (2 per side) on each side of the truck since the step harness has the wiring available for two lights. Others here have used LED strip lights with success as well.

Looks great, simple cheap upgrade. So the COB lights are thin enough that they don't interfere with the steps when they are fully retracted? If so I'm going to order them now

dbcooper748,

Ok, so i tried to get a few pictures of the install. I'm currently at work so this is the best i can do short of actually crawling up under the truck in the office parking lot lol. I can try to get more after work if need be.

Edit: I forgot to mention that they are mounted by 3M double sided tape (comes on them already). I simply cleaned the area on the truck with rubbing alcohol to remove any grease or oils and stuck them on. Easy peasy

baggedlvintegra,

The lights are very thin (maybe 5mm thick?). I have them mounted out towards the side just a tad so that the light from them shines out a bit, but they still wouldn't touch even if the lights were mounted directly between the steps and the truck.

I actually bought a second set of these lights to mount in the bed to replace the factory bed lights because they are so bright and cheap. I just haven't had time to mount them yet though with work and all.

Ill also note that i have had the step lights installed for roughly 2 years and I've had no issues at all. That's surprising given how cheap they are haha

Nice lights! The LEDs that came with the AMP PowerSteps are very purplish in color - I have puddle lamps on the mirrors which are white like yours, but when the step lights are on, it looks odd. Another member used these so I bought a set, just haven't put them on yet...they make them for Crew Cab and Double Cab...mine's a Double Cab...http://www.ebay.com/itm/181817211052

Only other tip I would add is make sure you torque the bolts per the instructions and check them in a couple of months. Several members noticed they loosened up after a bit...

This is perfect timing, I ordered 2 sets also. I noticed the other day that my amp lights are turning different colors 2 of the four are now a yellowish color while the others are still the blueish purple.

Annoying isn't it? Especially annoying when puddle lights are on and they are white!

    • Missing pieces of the Assembly   Detergency vs Solvency   Not the same thing. Detergency is the mechanism that surrounds solid particulates preventing amalgamation. Usually accompanied by a Dispersant whose job it is to keep those encapsulated particles in Suspension. Solvency keeps things that can be dissolved in solution.    Salt is a solid that can be dissolved. Pepper is a solid that cannot be dissolved. A detergent/dispersant is effective on pepper but a solvent is more effective on salt. As long as the solids remain in either state, dissolved or dispersed then they can be be removed with the oil upon change.    How many wranglers does it take to herd cats? Depends on how many cats your herding. How much sponge does it take to soak up water? How much water is there to soak up? Point is most oil blends start with some herding ability and next to zero sponge and recently even fewer wranglers are being sent to do the same job.    So you start with a dozen cowboys and zero cows but at the drive progresses you pick up cows along the way, but not cowboys. At some point you have more cows that the wranglers can handle and some leave the herd. Deposits. And the API has an acceptable number of cows they are willing to let loose. In the ideal world zero is the right number for he rancher but to the butcher....a few lost is fine. This cow is beat to death. Let's move on....   Solvency isn't something oils on the Walmart shelf care about AT ALL. Problem is, you motor does. Fuels driven varnish sticks rings and only a solvent can keep them in check. The bet is that the solids driven portion that plug the expander rings and the oil drain backs and VVT screens and AFM screens will be an issue long before varnish is. Not that it wont be but if they market well enough the consumer can be kept ignorant enough to either believe it is "normal" (A quart in 1 or 2K is normal) OR is kept at bay longer than the first owner is likely to hang on to the unit. Solvency cost money.    Now the OEM's have John Q. Public buffaloed into the belief that the number cows accumulated along the trail is a known and predictable CONSTANT. It isn't. Nor is the rate at which they crossed paths with them. Only the number of wrangles is constant. Or was. Each new generation of oil sees fewer and fewer of them.    So what happens when the number of cowboys is lower (lower TBN) with each seasons trail but the trial is longer (OCI) and the number of cows along that trail continues increase? (Conditions that promote deposits).    For awhile the blenders were on to something. Better bases are harder to degrade (fewer cows) but that was overtaken by a longer trail (OCI) and improved breeding (More cows) while continuing to reduce the cowboy staffing levels (TBN/Aniline #).    Marketing has been successful. We've fired most of the staff, cows breed line bunnies, the trail is ten times longer and we've convinced the boss his ranch is in better shape that it ever was.    That kids is just the cleaning side. The side few pay attention to.

    • Looking for this part for my truck. They don't sell just that one piece and to get it you have to pay over $100 even used for the whole air tube. The piece the hose clamp snaps into that is held on by the screw and nut. If anyone has access to one please let me know.
