Not sure if there are many more of these happening still, but I bough a 2016 Silverado crew cab 2 days ago and I had the service power steering light come up the first day and had no power steering. Its at the dealer now. They are going to replace the fuse box, but I don't think that is it. That's just what GM told them to do.

I haven't had any more issues since they replaced the motor for mine.

2014 Silverado 1500 LTZ 43000 miles

Power steering failed while driving. Lucky no accident. Contacted Chevrolet customer service. Was advised to have the truck towed to a dealer.

After two days, was told the EPS motor burnt and took the battery and the wiring with it.

Chevrolet agreed to pay for the repair less $130 Also given a rental car for three days...Well done. HOWEVER here is where the fun begins.

Four days later the dealer calls to tell me that they replaced the EPS motor but now have funny noise coming from the steering rack and pinon and that they found water inside the steering therefore it is not covered under warranty and I will have to pay an extra $2,000.

Contacted Chevrolet again. Raise my concern that if I cannot drive the truck in the rain then what good is it?

Chevrolet admitted that there should not be any water penetration into the steering system but insisted I will have to pay for the repair since they cannot verify where the water came from.

My conclusion is that Chevrolet is NOT standing behind the product. GM is aware of the defective EPS. It is only matter of time before a fatal accident will occur. I filed two reports with the U.S. DOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. WHEN (not if but WHEN) a fatal accident will occur because of the faulty EPS design, this will be the proof that GM has been notified of the danger.

It looks like I am not the only owner who has suffered from this failure. I am not sure what else I can do.

I paid over $40,000 for this truck, it will be for sale in the very near future. I will not risk the safety of my family or myself.

Was you able to hear this noise in the front in. I'm having similar problems and I just stared hearing some noise in my front end.

I recently went to a meeting in my 2014 Silverado, was done and try backing up and found I had no power steering. Looked down and seen the friendly message "service power steering, Drive carefully". I was tripping out!! I ended up driving to the other side of town with no power steering to the dealership and was told today "the electronic power steering motor shorted out" and needed to be replaced. Of course not under warranty or covered by the recall........$1,500 to fix!!!! With no indication of why it happened or how to keep it from happening again. Needless to say, I might be trading in this truck for a new one.

Search these forums for the "G218 ground fix" or something like that.  It may not be your problem but you can check it easily for free by yourself.

2014 Sierra, never had an issue with steering, recall was performed late last year if I remember right. I just washed it a couple days ago in a self-serve bay, and did a low pressure rinse on the frame and underside. Started it up to leave, and had the the lovely "Service power steering-drive with care" message. Yesterday, it completely lost power steering. I guess I get to make an appointment with the dealer. I'm thinking some water got some place it shouldn't be. This truck is really starting to grind my gears...

We had our rack and pinion go out, thankfully no one was injured, 2014 gmc sierra 1500. We replaced the wiring harness to the rack, the battery, the alternator, and now we are looking at the control module. It is is hit and miss with the steering. Go out and start the truck, no power steering, 15 minutes later try it again and you have power steering. We have checked all the connections, had it calibrated at least 6 times, and still trying to track down the problem. Any thoughts?

No offense but did you even read the thread?  This is a known problem with grounds.  Search these forums for "G218 fix" or tell your dealer to pull up "PIT5405".
