Jasonsupafly Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 2001 Silverado Z71 5.3 My alternator is going out. It has the 105 amp from the factory. If I go with a 130 or 145 amp will I have to change to a different size belt? Also, what brand alternator is decent these days? Got 203,000 out of the original. Thanks in advance!
Sirstud1 Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Get duralast autozone brand.. life time warranty.. they can tell u exactly what will fit
natedawg6.0 Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Yes, you will have to change belt sizes. I did mine today it was super easy. It's around 28 dollars and worth it.
00Silverado4x4 Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 The big this will the bigger alternator fit in the bracket. From what I have researched the size of the alternator changes a little bit when you go up to the bigger amp alternator. You may need to also change the bracket as well as the belt.

Bracket is fine. Belt is it
Jasonsupafly Posted December 10, 2015 Author Posted December 10, 2015 I went with the 145 amp Duralast. Bolted up fine but the belt they sold me was a whore and a half to get on. Barely fit so the tensioner didn't retract as much as I think it should have. Nate, can you give me the brand belt you used and the part number, please? Thanks!
txab Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 The larger belt in a gates K060930. AC Delco is 6K930 Both are 93 5/8"
Jasonsupafly Posted December 11, 2015 Author Posted December 11, 2015 Thanks so much, sir. They sold me the Duralast 930K6. I think its 92.91" This was probably my problem.
natedawg6.0 Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 923K6 is the number and "Driveworks" is the brand. Now, just to be clear this fits the 105 amp. That's what I've got. I'm no certified mechanic but, I'm thinking your tensioner should go back if the belt size is correct. I apologize for getting back to you late
txab Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Thanks so much, sir. They sold me the Duralast 930K6. I think its 92.91" This was probably my problem. Yes, That was your problem, 3/4" difference in length between the two
Jasonsupafly Posted December 12, 2015 Author Posted December 12, 2015 Txab. Went by OReillys. They are who have the Gates brand. I bought the K060930. They were able to find info on the Duralast that Auto Zone sold me. They claim the Gates is the same size as the Duralast 930K6. They said they could look and give me the next belt size up. I didn't want that. I just want the belt that works for my truck when upgrading from the 105 to the 145 amp alternator. Wont be able to try it until tomorrow. I guess if it fits the same ill just return the Duralast and leave it as is. My concern is that the tensioner didn't retract as much as it did when I have changed the belt in the past. We'll see I guess.
Chris Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 Ask for a belt for an 06 silverado 1500 with V8. That should be the correct belt with that alternator. I went with a full custom alternator and it uses the 05-06 belt.
Chris Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 I havent looked at numbers. Should not be that much variation in the "same" part. I am not sure what mine is. I just went to car quest and got the gates belt for an 06.
