That sucks. Mine has sat for four days and started up just like it was one. Nothing should die after just one week or even two. You have a defect.

No I really don't...... The battery was probably but since I sold it for $50 after I junked it that can be someone else's problem.

Took your advice 6 years ago and bought Sears' best Die Hard rig for $150... No one tells you those devices DO NOT work on batteries that are completely drained, which makes them worthless. We used the air pump on occasion but The cheap build resulted in the connector breaking within a year.

Technology has changed a lot in 6 years. The ones I am talking about will start the car WITHOUT a battery as well. So drained or not makes no difference. $59 at WalMart and works like a champ.

In winter add an aluminum avy shovel, when handle is compacted it is short enough to fit under rear seat storage bin.

I know this is years late, but regarding tools if you haven't seen them yet check out pass-through socket sets. They eliminate the need for deep-well sockets completely.

As for radios, Baofeng's are fantastic for backup or emergencies, but not the best quality on a few levels. Yes you need a ham license to use outside of emergencies, but if you're just using it for emergencies, a $25 Baofeng UV-5R (HAM) is pretty good bang for your buck. The UV-9G is another model they make that is GMRS FCC legal (requires separate GMRS license), and it's waterproof for $45. Both also can listen to all the standard NOAA weather channels. GMRS overlaps with bubble pack FRS radio frequencies so you can listen and talk to them as well.  Better radios are out there, especially mobile rigs up to 50 watts, as are better antennas, but for a backup, it'll do fine.  My GMRS UV-9G with an external mag mount antenna hit a repeater 50 miles away the other day.

I rarely go north of Fayetteville NC. In preparation my wife and I always have go bags. Snacks, drinks Tylenol. Charged cell phones. A well serviced vehicle. Tire’s never under 50 percent tread. I’ve never had a blowout or a break down. If there’s going to be seriously bad weather I reschedule.

Maintenance in the garage beats repairs on the side of the road, tow trucks and changing flats. Putting yourself at risk of being hit or killed by a bad driver when stranded on the side of the road makes no sense to me.

My father in-law is a retired master sergeant. Lives there. Crazy town. But that’s where he settled. Service members cutting up. Fine with me.
