2002 GMC Sierra 1500 Z-71 Brake Lights Failed

Gents, I have a 02 Sierra 1500 4x4 with 190k, 5.3L. A few months back the cruise control started to work intermittently. Then eventually, It failed all together. Being that I know little about electrical systems and Its an old truck, I dismissed it. Recently, I decided that I wanted my cruise control back and I started reading about the issues others had and how to repair. I read that the cruise control and the break lights are connected and that the cruise will not work if the stop lamps have failed.

I started with my usual method of trouble shooting, look it up online, throw parts at it, cheap and easy first. I swapped in a delco stop lamp switch and a doorman dist block. It didn't help. Then I realized that when I start the truck with the remote start and then step on the break pedal, It shuts the truck off. I believe the switch to be fine.

  • Cruise button will not light the green indicator on the gauge cluster,
  • Stop lamps do not work
  • original stop lamp switch appears to be functional
  • fuses both under hood and on the side of the dash are good
  • 3rd brake light works, now that I replaced the bulbs
  • tail, reverse, turn signals, and hazzards all work. I believe the distribution block to be fine. (I even tried swapping it with a doorman unit)
  • I replaced tail lamp bulbs
  • all signals to my trailer plug are good except stop lamps

So, in my digging around I found a purple wire plugged in under the dash. First I noticed the corrosion and then I saw it was burnt. I unplugged It and saw that the socket was also burnt. Then I pulled the trim back and discovered that wires that go the 3rd break light have been tapped into. I believe the burnt purple wire runs to the rear defrost. I never use it. I don't really want to replace that block, plug, and wire harness $.

 

I have a test light but not a volt meter. I can purchase or borrow one if need be. I think either I have a broken wire in the harness under the truck or maybe the turn signal stalk/switch is bad.

I just picked up a multimeter today from H.D. I will see what I can do. I need to test voltage at the stop light switch on the pedal. Then I want to jumper direct to the break light harness as close to the switch as possible and see if i can get them to light. Eliminating the possibility a bad wire running all the way back to the tails.

You should find out where the wires go that were tapped into the third brake light. Do not really think that is an issue, but, since the power to brake lights only appears when brakes are applied, it is odd to have something tapped into it for power.

 

What is a "doorman dist block"

 

If your truck uses the same bulbs/filament for both brake and turn signals, then the signal switch/flasher is involved in the brake lights as well. If your truck has a signal flasher unit with more than 3 wires, then the flasher could be causing the brake lights to not work. On vehicles with a 2 or 3 wire flasher can, the signal switch in the column can cause brake lights to not work(on vehicles with combined brake/signal bulbs).

 

Since the 3rd brake light works properly, I am pretty sure you can safely assume the brake light switch is working. If the signals and brake lights use the same bulb/filament in the rear, and the signals work, you can safely assume wiring, bulbs, and sockets are good as well.

 

If I am reading your post correctly, you have not had brake lights for a few months now, and no one ever told you?

 

One of the stupidest things GM ever did was to stop the brake lights from working with the key turned off. Used to be I could check brake lights when I got in the car before starting the engine by looking in the mirror with my foot on the brake and see the lights on the wall. Now, I have to turn the key on and that turns the parking lights on as well, so the wall is already reflecting those lights.

The distribution block is located under the bed on the frame. It has 4 wire harness plugged into it. One is the feed from the front and then distributes to the tail light assemblies, trailer lights and license plate lights. I tried a replacement part from Doorman (thats the aftermarket brand).

I'm gonna head back to the garage and see what I can come up with.

I'm having a difficult time finding a wire diagram for the stop light switch, and the wiring in the back. upfitter didn't seem to be much help.

So I retraced all my steps. I decided to reference the owners manual while checking fuses. A bit embarrassing but after all that work, I found a bad fuse.I probably wouldn't have checked it if I didn't know what the stop light switch was.

What I used to do when I was looking for an electrical issue was to use a test light to test all fuses. The switch to blade type fuses made it very easy to test. Did not bother looking at the map, just tested all of them. Sometimes the label does not list all the circuits that fuse covers.

    • I like the idea.  I would pick diesel if I had a choice. I need pictures though.
    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay
    • Black bumper and the later years Z-71 style color matched grille.
    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
