Off road y pipe for the 5.3 2015 with stock manifolds??

I was looking to get a little more sound out of the truck, currently have the 40 series flowmaster, and resonator deleted. But after driving it around for a bit now, I want little more out of it...

 

I called the muffler shop and they suggested switching out to a 10 series flowmaster, is that my only option or do they make a off road y pipe to fit the stock manifolds? Everything I found on summit and jegs states (works with long tube headers)

 

If the y pipe is an option, id rather go for that as a bolt in/out so I can swap out as needed for inspections and so on.. instead of welding in another muffler.

 

I do already have a CAI which did provide some additional agressivness, but want little more..

 

Any suggestions would be great.

Usually the ORY's that are available is just like you saw, bolt ons for aftermarket headers. The options that you have is for thay shop to fab one up for you and weld it in. Or you can buy a universal Y from like magnaflow or Carven exhaust and weld it in as well.

 

As far as a bolt on option you will need headers from Kooks or ARH. Those are the only 2 that i know for sure habe the Y as a bolt on so you can get an ORY or a catted Y and change between the 2 for whatever reason.

 

If you want more sound headers will really get you what you're looking for. Just be prepared for the wallet to take a beating lol

Yea I was trying to avoid the headers until my warranty expires so not to void anything. Its only got 7K miles on it and don't want any unexpected costs due to voided warranty repairs.

Just cut the Cat's off.

While i agree with this it depemds on you're dealer if they will throw a hissy fit over this as well....

 

What i did on my colorado was get a dummy cat off ebay to pass emissions. Just hid/renoved my nitrous lines and it always passes.... Even though i have no cats at all to a 22" magnaflow and a JTR LT header lol.

Or drill the cats out....That's what i did for the 3rd cat at first and then just replaced the can for a piece of 3.5 pipe with a ball flange on the end.

I did that at first with my first cat but then did the dummy 2nd and the header got rid of the 1st cat. It worked grate but you know..... Stock manifolds are crap.

 

I am a Dr with the 5cyl but these 5.3s are alien to me so idk how it would affect the sound :)

I appreciate the suggestions and my goal is to keep things original as I can, if I could get or have made a off road y pipe that I can interchange as needed for any reason, warranty or emissions id rather go that route.

Not sure what "flapper" is being discussed above, but the only things done to the exhaust is removing the resonator, installing a flowmaster 40 series and dumping the exhaust over the axle.

 

I already called the shop that installed the flow and they would not fabricate the y pipe. So either I need to find another shop or look at other options.

Now removing the cats or drilling them out wont that throw some codes? Would that require tune to eliminate those?

Definitely have to tune it. Fuel, and basic engine management are done through the cats. Would throw at least 3 codes unless you can get dummy o2 sensors. No offence man seems like a lot of unnecessary work for not much reward sound wise. If you want loud sometimes and emissions legal put a diverter valve in after the last cat and run a wire to a switch in the cab. Loud on demand!

If your just looking for more sound, then by far the easiest, cheapest with least amount of hassle down the road would be to get a diff. mufler. Headers wouldn't do much good on a stock internal 5.3 motor anyway. Keep in mind the 420hp 6.2 has the same exhaust manifolds as the 355 hp 5.3, so you'd have to do some decent internal work on the 5.3 to outflow the stock manifolds.

I disagree. Long tube headers and a performance muffler on any engine will increase sound output. I do agree tho that a different muffler is the easiest cheapest way to increase sound

I don't think it is as much about flow as it is how the exhaust is well, exhausted. The log manifold couples the sound of all four cylinders within a foot of the port. Long tube headers combine the cylinders 3-4feet. Tube steel is also a different sound (raspy) then a cast iron log. I have cast iron headers on my Pontiac and the sound is quite different than the original logs. There is science behind header tube length vs sound and performance

    • I have the same running boards on my truck and I do agree they are bulky. I also find myself stepping over them when getting in and out of the truck. Besides providing protection to the rocker panels, they aren't very useful.  I will be replacing them soon with the Amp Powersteps.

With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
