front parking sensors - false beep

Well I happen to own a 2015 Tundra with front park assist and it does the exact same thing as the Chev... so yes it does happen to other brands... including the holy grail of Toyota. Ice on a sonar based sensor will block the signal so unless you add a heating element to it to keep them clean it is what is. Clean the sensors off and just keep going. Now unless you are experiencing where they are clean and clear and still alarming which points to a sensor fault.

I agree with what vmax said. Any brand can have a sensor obstructed with ice, but if you clean the sensors and still have a false alert, there's a problem. That's exactly what happened in my case. For what it's worth, I just called my dealer to cancel the appointment that I had for today. Explained why I was canceling. He agreed that I should wait until it gets wet again so that he can determine which sensor has a problem.

Reading through this thread really makes me glad I don't live where it snows!! Hope you get the faulty sensor replaced when it acts up the next time. Cheers - Rick

Interesting to know about your Toyota… Actually, I don't think the truck(Tundra) I had was any better than most of the GM trucks I've owned over the past several decades.

My concern with my new GMC lies with how little residue (a very slight "film" of ice, not packed on snow or ice) it's taking to trip the center units. And it's crazy how the outer sensors don't have this same problem happening, noting that they, too also have the same minuscular layer of ice on them too.… As has already been discussed, I'll simply wait for the same scenario to occur and follow with showing what this looks like to the tech…

No doubt many other owners are having similar problems..

2014 Silverado High Country

I have the same problem, started in the fall with the cold weather. The sensor alarm would go off when driving slow, the service dept got it to do it so they changed the front sensors. It is better now but if the roads are wet the alarm will go off when coming to a stop. Now the dealer tells me that it is normal in the damp weather. The paint is now peeling of the new sensors after about 2000 mi. If they had told me this would happen when I bought the truck I would not have a problem with it, I could have decided then weather to buy the truck or not based on that information. Options are not cheap and if I wanted to give money away I would give it to my favorite charity, not GM.

Any brand of truck with them does the same thing. ... Ford, GM, Dodge, Toyota, Nissan... whatever. It's a simple sonar based sensor and ice interferes with it as it blocks it's signal reflection. There is no fix for that beyond cleaning them off, parking the truck where it is warm and letting it thaw etc. There is no problem with either of your trucks so don't waste your dealerships time.... mud also does the same thing.... mind you most people here never drive through it so they wouldn't know. You turn the sensors off and deal with it, case closed. If that is unacceptable or too much effort or whatever sell the truck... and buy one without park assist sensors. Yes they annoy me too as mine are froze up constantly and beeping.... just like my Toyota and my Fords before... but I park inside, they thaw and work again for a while at least the next day.

My company has 2 fords with sonar . Neither go off unless the sensors are completely blocked . My new 2016 sierra they go off for no reason . There is nothing covering them . I can wipe them off but if it rains then freezes water must get behind them and cause it because there is nothing on the surface . Either the sensors are junk or it is a bad design . But our fords do not do this in cold weather unless they are burried over in snow .

I've been having the same problem with my 2016 as well. First it started in the winter on my rear bumper sensors and now it's happening in the spring with my front left senor in dry/clear conditions. Took it to service today, will update you guys soon as I get a response.

 

EDIT: Service said they reset the messages, similar to what I read before and they couldn't replicate it so hopefully it's fixed.

I only get the messages when it is iced over thick or covered in snow. I am wondering what other mods (lifts, leveling, tire sizes, etc) people have on those trucks having problems. As far as mine goes, running 18" tires with no lift or leveling. When snow is wet and thick, I also have to clean off the rear bumper as it will set those off too if it falls down over the sensors. I even had these problems on my Escape and LR3 (all rear sensors) in heavy or wet snow.

My front sensors go off for no reason. There is no ice or water. I can be sitting at a red-light or stop sign and it goes off, no cross traffic & nothing in front of me. This includes the visual on the dash & audio alert. In addition, when I pull up to a car in a parking space or pull up to the front of my garage I get a visual warning on the dash, but no audio. The rear sensors work perfectly.

My 16 has 1000 miles on it and is doing the same thing. Random alerts from left front while sitting still. Rain and snow make it worse, but they have never been covered over when it happened.

Well looks like my truck has the same issue... We finally got a bit of rain here in Cali and my right front sensors have been going off for no reason... I think I'm still gonna swing by my local dealer to see what they tell me...

Similar issue with my '16. My dealer performed a service bulliten last time in, better but still get false warning on occassion after being parked during a rain storm.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install.
