IO5 to IO6 upgrade for 2015 GMC Sierra 1500

Hello everyone

I'm sure this has been talked about somewhere in this site but i can't seem to find anything on it so what im looking to do is upgrade from the IO5 to IO6 so i can have navigation in my truck. I have researched and researched trying to find out how to go about doing it and im almost positive that all i need to do is a flash of the IO6 system software to my current IO5. most sites/viedos i seen they say you need a GPS antenna and the IO6 module but i know for a fact that my truck already has a GPS antenna and the way i was able to find out was by sending directions to the truck then completely turning off the phone including removing the battery and driving to my destination the truck still knows how far off i am from the turn or if i have left the planned route and the only way that can happen is with GPS.

now i have looked in my setting there is a page that states " The SW of the HMI module contains open source code. the license terms as well as the source code of the open source SW used in this device can be found at the link below

website ( x.co/boschcmoss )

i check out the the website and the codes are a gig or 2 so im thinking this are the firmware for all GM vehicles but im not sure and i dont want to flash something without knowing. can someone help me out i would greatly appreciate it.

You have a GPS antenna, but it only connects to the OnStar module. If you want to maintain your OnStar Directions and Connections subscription then you do not need to do anything but pay the monthly fee. If you want the in-dash map showing on the screen and to not pay OnStar's monthly service fee, then you will have to replace the HMI module. The HMI's without factory navigation don't even have a place to plug in a GPS antenna. The HMI is behind the glove box, and the OnStar and radio modules are behind the 8" screen.

If you add navigation using a new HMI, you'll need to use a splitter on the existing GPS antenna, or add a new antenna under the dash as some sites offer.

Nav was added to my truck when I purchased it. They replaced the module behind the glove box. Unsure if an additional antenna was installed. I am satisfied with the factory nav, but as others have mentioned its not the best.

I upgraded my io3 to io6 nav through MVI. They are on this site and I highly recommend them. I now have complete factory Bluetooth, nav, XM and all the bells and whistles of io6, including factory antenna. Anthony was a great help and frankly it was easy to set up.

was it part of your purchase deal, or was it extra? Thinking about buying the Module from chevy parts, and install it, and just have the Dealership activate it.

It was part of the purchase deal.

I am in the same situation as the original poster. My son-inlaw says, to use my iPhone or the garmen. If I get a new truck it will have apple car play and I can just use that.
