Midnight Edition Wrangler Duractrac Issues

Figured I'd share my experience with you guys, curious if anyone else has had the same issue.

I bought a 2015 Midnight edition about three weeks ago, the weekend after Christmas. Before purchase, I test drove the truck and loved everything about it, coming from a 2007 Dodge Ram. As I merged on the highway and got up to speed, I noticed a slight vibration coming from the rear, figured it was just an easy tire balance, or maybe the truck had been sitting a few months and just needed a heat cycle on the tires. Who knows. Anywho, mentioned it to the salesman and he said, sure thing, if it persists in 300 miles, bring it back.

330 miles later I bring it back with the same issue. Long story short they've had the truck for about 11 days, but it's finally ready and I'm going to pick it up today. According to the dealer, they would balance out to zero, but the vibration would still persist. Apparently it has something to do with the way the tires are manufactured. Anywho, after 8 tires they said it finally rides like it's supposed to. There's some kind of computer and a number of sensors they had to attach to the truck when driving to figure the area of vibration to ensure it wasn't in the driveline.

That said, I'm glad to finally get it back! They filled the tank and it's being detailed right now. Leaving after work to snag it and return the loaner Tahoe they gave me almost two weeks ago.

Go and have a good read through the "shake and vibration" thread that is 500 pages long now. You've got the same problem a lot of us have been dealing with. It is not the tires as much as it is how sensitive these trucks are to anything being slightly out of balance. Some peoples vibes are worse than others. Good luck!

Hope they fix the problem ? if NOT bring it back . Good looking truck . note. I have 16'000 an no problem .

ahhh okay, I haven't seen that thread. I just bought the truck a few weeks ago and Google search for me didn't turn up a whole lot regarding the duratracs and silverados. Hopefully it's good to go though

The OP is a perfect example of a dealer that followed the GM protocol for driveline vibrations. If the dealer will take the time the process will tell the dealer exactly where the issue is coming from whether it be tires or driveline.

Those that continue to complain that GM is doing nothing need to re-direct that that their dealer isn't doing anything as the process is very easy and layed out for the dealer to find the cause.

I have a 15 Midnight as well. Man I hope I don't run into this. Just turned over 10,000 km's. Would the dreaded vibration have shown up by now if it is going to? Or could it still appear?

I bought duratracs for my 14. Went thru 7 of them and could never get the vibration out. Finally returned them and bought Bridgestone Duelers Revo 2s. Balanced right out and haven't had a problem since. Even switched them to my 15

Yep, after 8 tires they figured out what it was. I've put 1,000 miles on it now and it still rides perfect. No vibration, no shutter, tracks perfectly straight. As irritating as the wait was, they fixed the issue.

However, they did manage to hit something in the shop with it...the front driver side bumper has a large white scuff on it now from where someone hit something. I did a walk around before I took delivery and pointed it out, so now I have to take it in again sometime within the next week for them to fix that...

I took my 15 HI Country in for routine service, oil, tire rotation, got it back....rear vibrated like crazy at 70-75 mph, took it back, they balanced the tires correctly and no problems for 10k miles now.

I have large duratracs on my truck and have never had a vibration, knocks on wood.

What size did you go with? I like your setup

I believe they are 275/70/18's. Sorry for the late reply.

No worries! What kind of mpg are you averaging? With the stock 265's I'm getting about 16.5 total average over 1600

    • Has anyone run these on their 2500?
    • have you stuck with dealer oil changes since then? I made the same switch after getting tired of crawling around under the truck, but I’ve found some dealers are way better than others about getting you in quickly. Curious if yours has been good about scheduling or if you’ve had to look elsewhere for quicker turnaround.
    • Thank you.   I am set on a 3.0 Duramax as my previous truck with a Ford Ecoboost had just as many, if not more, "common" issues.  Cam phasers, timing chain issues, 10-speed valve body and CDF drum, emissions issues, etc.  So I figured, why not get 2x the fuel mileage (these things got 27+mpg on every mixed city/highway test drive I put them through) and better towing capability with resale value to boot?   My minimum, shortest trip will be 50 miles 1-way and I regularly go out of state with a travel trailer.  I'm planning on using this for a marketing/event promotion business also, which would require regular towing of trailers for bands, DJs, sound and lighting gear, along with my personal camera gear for filming events.   Looked at other trucks in the $30k+ price range but the issues seem to be everywhere, plus too many with gaudy mods.  I'm literally sticking with RWD trucks because they tend to be actually used as trucks, vs. the 4x4 models I've seen with unsafe lifts, huge tires, and general mods that would affect reliability (I'm wondering if some of them were tuned, hence the aggressive throttle response and hard shifting).   So my goal is to find a stock, 3.0 with 1 or 2 owners, in good physical condition, and decently well maintained.  Can't seem to find that up here, everything in the $27-30k range has had multiple owners, smoke smell, issues, or body damage.  Or the ridiculously modified trucks with 80k miles for under $27k but lots of problems...
    • That’s pretty tough Grumpy. I reread the previous few posts. They all reference oil changes. Much like your last thread. In my humble opinion it keeps things interesting.
    • Engine Wear and ISO 4406   1.) Cold Starts. 2.) High Particle Count. 3.) Low operating temperature viscosity and high low temperature cranking viscosity. 4.) Depleted AW, Friction and Acid packages.  5.) High engine load.    https://me.caltexlubricants.com/en_me/home/learning/from-chevron/heavy-duty-diesel-vehicles-and-equipment/The-Importance-of-Clean-Engine-Oil-and-Its-Impact-on-Equipment-and-Business-Performance.html   High particle counts have five sources. 1.) They are manufactured within the engine. Both wear debris and amalgamation of degradation products and combustion driven soot (worse in GDI). 2.) They are ingested via intake air. Ever hear the best oil filter is a good air filter? 3.) They are entrained in the fuel. 4.) This one is insidious. They are introduced in 'fresh oil'. 5.) They are introduced during the oil change.   ISO 4406 is the test that measures and quantifies the combine effects of all of the above particle related issues. You can mitigate your way into multiples of engine life by being attentive to them all.    https://www.hyprofiltration.com/blog/is-new-oil-clean   (from the link above)    [Quote] What Is the Recommended ISO 4406 Cleanliness Code for New Oil?   A good upper limit for new oil cleanliness is 16/14/11 (ISO 4406). Typical new oil usually has ISO codes of 19/17/15 or worse, which is far too dirty for sensitive components. This can be a major cause of degradation and premature failure.
