Taylor Plug Wires With Kook's Headers

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone. I am trying to locate the correct Taylor 10mm spark Plug Wires to use for a new Kook's Header Install. I've seen pictures of quite a few people with this combination, but I have been unable to identify the best spark plug wire set to use. The two concerns are plug wire length (9" or 12" long) and angle of the spark plug boot (180 degree straight boot or 135 degree angled boot). If I go by "stock" (w/o headers) Taylor makes a replacement wire set with 8" wires and 180 degree straight plug boots. However the headers may add issues with angle where the stock design may get too close to the headers. In a lot of the pictures I have seen it's hard to see the boot angle as the pictures are taken from above looking downward. The design of the Taylor boot makes it difficult to tell what everyone is using. On the length, I have seen both length used and the 12" ones definitely look too long as they tend to curl around loose a little. I have included a picture from the site of the fit I am looking for, just need to get the boot angle right. Just an FYI, this is for a 2014 5.3 and I am looking at the blue colored wires. Thanks in advance guys, you are the best!

I have narrowed it down to 4 spark plug wire choices:

#79603 - 9" Wires, 180 degree plug boots

#79613 - 9" Wires, 135 degree plug boots

#79605 - 12" Wires, 180 degree plug boots

#79614 - 12" Wires, 135 degree plug boots

The 9" 135 shown in the pic should work just fine. Get you some Stage 8 locking header bolts as well.

Does that look like the 135 plug boot? My eyes are getting bad, but I agree with you. What's funny is Taylor lists the 9" wires as LS car wires and the 12" wires as truck wires! I think this was for the previous motors before DI.

Thanks

Yes, the coils set up higher on the Gen III & IV truck engines.

Well, we installed the Kook's headers & cross-pipe this morning! The truck sounds healthy without being overly loud. I ordered the wires yesterday after several of you responded, thanks. I will let everyone know on the fit and take some pictures then.

I ordered:

#79613 - 9" Wires, 135 degree plug boots

Thanks again everyone!

The sound is pretty cool with the Kook's headers, hi flow cats and Borla cat back GM exhaust system. It is making some strange noises I need to identify. I also noticed that it sounds funny at WOT when it shifts. I think I need a tune! I ran it both on the highway at 70+ speeds and around town. Mostly with the window down. I can just barely hear an exhaust note at cruising speeds, where with just the cat back Borla I could not. I ordered a bunch of goodies today for it and will have most everything the beginning of next week.

Oh, by the way.... When I installed the headers and drove about 20-25 miles there was no check engine light! I was told that with the high flow cats, that I would get the dreaded 420 & 430 codes, which is from the back two O2 sensors letting you know that the air quality is a little off. They do not tune the motor, they are just a check mechanism. I did some research and there are a few ways to have the codes go away without the tune. Do a search on Oxygen Sensor simulators. On the rear 2 sensors ONLY, you can install spacers that are nothing more than an extension tube, that takes the O2 sensor out of direct exhaust flow and it's enough to not trigger the check engine light.

After restarting the truck in the driveway tonight the check engine light is on, so..........

  • 2 weeks later...

Here is the full Monty with the all of the parts installed. Ended up going with the shorter wires with the 135 degree spark plug boots. Fits like a glove!
