Just Ordered Black Bear Autocal

I just placed my order for a Black Bear Autocal. I have installed some goodies this last week and it definitely needs a tune. Let's see how the experience goes.

Having recently adding a Cat-back Borla exhaust system, Air Raid Intake tube, Taylor plug wires and a set of Kook's headers with high flow cats, the truck is running a little rich down low. I also noticed shifting that needs firming up as well. I love the way the truck runs off idle and higher in the RPM range. I also need to turn off the secondary O2 sensors as the dreaded "check engine" light is now on. I was hoping to get by with some O2 sensor spacers to keep the CE light off, but really want to clean up the bottom end response.

You'll be GLAD you did !!!!

I got my tuner yesterday and I got the final touches on the truck today. I was actually able to get rid of the check engine (CE) light with some O2 spacers. So that way if I have to take the truck to the dealer and I put the stock tune back in, it will not throw an engine code. Added some locking stage 8 header bolts, installed the 10mm Taylor wires and did the CRC intake valve clean. Now on to the tune!

Well, I finished installing my Elite oil catch can and one way check valve today. I originally installed the clean air separator part of the kit (mostly because it was easiest) and I mounted and connected the catch can yesterday. I installed the whole kit at this point except for the one way check valve, as I wanted to make sure I installed it correctly. I went out this morning double checked my connections and installed the one way check valve in the outlet side hose with the arrow pointed towards the motor. I drove the truck both days with no issues. However, late today when I went to move the truck inside the fence, I noticed I could not remote start the truck. Last time this happened I had the check engine light on from when I installed my headers and hi flow cats. I fixed this by installing O2 sensor simulators on the back two sensors (after cats). This has fixed the issue for over a week now. I am wondering if I did something wrong in the catch can install...

What a coincidence, I got my tunes from Justin late today! I noticed the Black Bear AutoCal has a code reader in it. I will check the code in the morning. I would like to have this go code free when I have the GM tune files in it so I don't get as much of a headache from the dealer. Any ideas?

Thanks

I was able to clear the code with my Black Bear autocal tuner. It was the dreaded 430 trouble code from the rear O2 sensors. I then installed the tunes Justin sent me. He asked for my wants and needs and about my mods.

I told him I had the AirRaid Jr. kit basically, Kook's 1 3/4" headers, head pipe with high flow cats, Borla / GM cat back system and the Taylor plug wires. I had sent him two files of my driving files. One was a regular driving to work mode with the mandatory 3-4 second high rpm runs. The other was a high speed run on the turnpike with more high rpm runs. I also claimed the motor felt fat and rich below 2000 RPM. I wanted to try and keep as much economy as I could, but wanted to be able to run it a little every now and then. Also, the transmission slips big time between shifts, even though it's smooth.

WOW! He hit the drivability issues right on the nose! It is a joy to drive now. I don't feel that much more performance, but it is smooth! More responsive from off idle to 2K. The transmission shifts about 50% to 70% faster as well, and still keeps the smooth shifts at lower rpms. Call me crazy, but the motor actually sounds quieter at cruise speeds as well, but still growls big time when I am accelerating.

I am impressed.

How long does it take for BBP to send you the tune once you send them your driving logs?

He did send two engine tunes plus the transmission tune. He sent a 87/89 Octane tune and a 93 Octane tune.

It shocked me too, but I had heard of it before. The handheld tuner holds 5 tunes. He uses 2 of them for the stock GM tunes (engine & transmission). Then he uses the next 2 slots for your new modded tunes, and the last one is a tune for premium fuel or E85.
