2015 - differential gear whine at hwy speeds

Still don't have an ETA. It's COB on Monday, a week since i dropped my truck off. I've now had loaners for 13 days since my purchase on 2/29 and have been unable to have my own vehicle.

Called the service dept. 3 times today trying to get an update but I'm either put on infini-ring or hung up on.

Worst vehicle purchase experience I've ever had. I'm insulted, I'm angry, I'm disappointed, and I'm frustrated because I dont know how to fix this. I feel like my new truck is a bucket now, because its been torn apart and sewed back together by bench techs. I could have picked up a $10k pickup that has been less molested.

Frankly.. I dont want this truck anymore. This truck is a lemon. If I dont get an update by COB tomorrow (and I'm not going to call them.. mind you..) I am going to contact a lawyer.

Call GM customer Service and get them moving on it. Tell them how you feel about the truck and your dealership experience.

That's what I did and they worked with the dealer on getting my truck fixed.

Got my truck fixed with a brand new Rear Differential plus they sent me a letter for $1000 GM accessories for my inconvenience.

Which I'm picking up tomorrow it like Christmas in April!

I have owed many GM trucks...this one is by far the best!!

I'm weird I guess. My dad calls it "letting the factory air out."

Once somethings been disassembled I feel like its been tainted. This truck makes me feel "unclean" now that its been apart.

idk. I've never had a problem like this.

Where do I find the #? If I dont hear form them by COB tomorrow I will call.

I gave them a call and we've opened a "case."

The lady called the dealer and couldn't get them to answer. Surprise.

She said she will "investigate" and get back to me in up to 48 hours.

They acted like this happens all the time. There was no discussion of compensation.

Well it's good to know you're keeping on top of it. I'm curious to see how your situation turns out. As I stated earlier, I have a similar issue but due to winter restarting itself and a new coat of salt and chemicals on the road, I have yet to take my truck out of storage and bring it in. I'll see if I can do a video of mine before bringing it in to see if our issues are identical. My truck is a W/T regular cab, standard box 2wd with 3.42 gears and 5.3L

It incurs the cost to GM, as their supplier, the "Mexican Axle" (formerly known as American Axle) will not supply the assemblies for free.

Tier 1 suppliers get charged back for part warranty work.

I dont want to speak to details until I have something in writing. Right now its just phone calls and spoken word. I've had no expectation set and no timetable.

All I know is that I don't have a vehicle that is mine, and yet I'm paying a loan and insurance.

Hmmm, tell GM this kind of thing might cost them at least ONE new sale. Me. Just when I tested a '15 equipped exactly like I want.

They are trying to make it right it sounds like.

I was able to swap out of the loooong loaner today into one that is more on par with what I need to get around. They told me what we're working on may take "up to 2 weeks."

I sitll have nothing in writing and I dont know who is doing all this but.. well the onstar on my '15 doesn't work anymore so the truck must be apart or something.(I tried to a locator app to see if it was at the dealer still. it has some stuff in it I need.)

Frankly, since I've pushed back, both GM and the dealer have thus far exceeded my expectations. I am sitll unhappy with having a loaner for such a long period, but at least its a loaner that I would buy if given the option..

Well, Communication seems pretty poor so far.

I'm kind of in the dark here. I have nothing at all in writing, my onstar vehicle locator for my '15 isn't working anymore, the dealer is not sure if my truck is still at the dealer, or in the state, or.. on earth.. I have some personal FX in the truck so I hope we find it before this is over. I can only assume its in 42,000 pieces all over the dealership floor.

I dont have a poc outside of my salesman, he doesn't really have anything to tell me and cant tell me who hes talking to, I dont have a GM like.. claim number or anything like that or... idk.. *SOMETHING* that tells me I wont be in this loaner forever. (which quite frankly, I like this loaner and am ok with it but.. I'd kinda like to be able to leave the state ya know? and add running boards and a bed cover, but I can't on a truck that isn't mine.)

They said 2 weeks last Tuesday, today marks 1 week and I'm sitting here in the dark. I'm still frustrated. My SECOND payment is due in 2 weeks.

I'm sorry to hear that darkfox :( I have no idea what you put for a down payment on the truck, but if it wasn't much, would it be best to cut your ties and just let the bank repo it? Just a thought........

I know I promised you I would let you know my findings. I just literally (30 minutes ago) took my Silverado out of winter storage. I went out on the highway and ran it up to 67-73MPH, my whine is still there. It's acting like a poorly adjusted ring & pinion. I called this morning and put an appointment on the books for tomorrow. I will be bringing mine in at 9:15AM. I'll update you with their findings and how they handle my case. I'm in no way trying to hijack your thread, hopefully any information I can come up will be beneficial to you. For what it's worth, the technician that's working on my truck said he's seen a lot of '14's and '15's with bad ring and pinions. He's hopes to get a set that "patterns" well. Last but not least, he told me there was a rash of gears that snuck out the door that were cut poorly due to the workers not replacing a cutting head on the gear cutting equipment. How many or when that date range was, was unknown.

Well, I don't know that I can say this since I have NO WRITTEN PROOF AT ALL of this..

but on the phone and in person, they told me they cannot resolve my problem, they are out of solutions, and want to replace the truck.

This is what I'm waiting on. I went down last Tuesday and we pulled some stock #s for comparable replacements. Supposedly,. they are talking to GM about getting it replaced at no cost to me.

But again, I have no poc and nothing in writing. So it may as well be political campaign promises.

I'm really enjoying driving the loaner that I have now. It's a great truck and I wouldn't mind just keeping it. But.. it's not mine. I don't own a vehicle.. I'm just paying payments on a loaner. (This is my only vehicle.)

I just want this crap to be over. Day after day of hearing nothing, having nothing in writing, its very frustrating. This is not the only super stressful thing going on in my life, far from it.. and its really getting in the way of some of my other day to day things I'm dealing with.

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.
    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O.
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
