2015 - differential gear whine at hwy speeds

I'm gonna keep on this.

Update:

Trucks back.

They put about 50 miles on it for testing, I assume. Which is fine.

Parts replaced:

22943114 SPACER

22943111 SEAL

22943016 BEARING

22943108 BEARING

23114036 GEAR KIT (this is the 3.42 gear kit apparently, in case you folks are doing a re-gear.)

19300457 lube

88900330 additive

Tech notes "backlash variation .005 180 degrees from 1st point of measure."

Tech also notes my 6th gear has noise. - asked for clarification. Serivce manager said 6 speed auto has "lots of gear noise" that "subsides at 2k miles."

I took it up to 71 on the way home.

It's still doing it..................... at 70 and above.

Witholding judgement until I have more time, but if it continues.. its going back on for this issue.

The 2016 I dropped off with a gu6/G80 did NOT do this at ANY speed. My 2014 3.08 open diff 6 speed 4wd truck did NOT do this at ANY speed.

This is not normal.

Did the speed where the whine enters/leaves change at all from the original whine? If it shifted slightly, I'd say the new ring/pinion install was botched and the guy didn't do it right. Putting a ring and pinion in takes a special person to do it. You have to be the equivalent of a mechanical Picasso or don't even bother.

If the whine didn't change even one bit, then I would start looking elsewhere. I would take it back immediately and let them have at it again.

I don't understand the statement "Lots of gear noise that subsides at 2k miles". Do they mean you need to put 2k miles on and the transmission stops making noise or did they mean to say 2k rpm?

Mileage. He claims the noise will subside at 2k miles. This will only take me another week as I have already hit 1000 miles on my truck (purchased 2/29/16)

Sound starts exactly at 70 like it did before, I have not had it on the road long enough to get anywhere above that to see if it acts EXACTLY like it used to, but I can tell you my heart sank on the ride home with the noise started to drown out my news talk radio.

He said give it 2k miles and if its still doing it bring it back in and we'll look at the transmission.

I'm taking a long trip this weekend, about 3 hours of continuous cruise control on the highway. We'll see.

I'm not trying to poop on your parade but if the whine is there now, it's not going to "wear" itself away. I would be shocked if it got quieter. My whine in mine started with 30 miles on the odometer. By 600 miles it's really noisy. I'm going to bring mine in coming up in a few weeks. I'll post up how my experience goes.

This is going to be resolved one way or the other. I didn't pay for a "broken" truck I paid for a truck.

If the thing has continuous problems.. I'll talk to someone about lemon law.

Certainly keep me in the loop in what you find out.

Might I suggest if you haven't already start documenting EVERYTHING. Who you talked to, date, time, what each person said, video, etc. I'm going to record mine driving down the highway before bringing it in. That way if GM needs to do a buy back, you have ammo.

it is only a matter of time before GM decides that differential whine is "NORMAL" and no repairs should be attempted.

Well I picked up my truck this afternoon from the dealer and no more rear diff. noise. I'm very happy!! The dealer and GM have a satisfied customer!!

Don't celebrate yet. Give it at least 3k miles before you claim that the truck is fixed. When you bought the truck new it did not whine then, did it? I t sometimes takes a while for an improperly assembled differential to start whining.

Drove my truck 300 miles on the highway this weekend.

The noise is present, but it doesn't get louder with time, and isn't as loud in general. I can drown it out with the radio but talking or quiet music, its still present.

Truck has ~1200 miles on it now. It drives good, it just has this .. noise.

I intended on taking my truck out of storage this week to bring it in to hopefully shed some light on this subject. However, we got a dusting of snow and MNDOT put about a half inch of salt everywhere! I'm at least 2-3 weeks out before this stuff could be rinsed away by any kind of rain!

Mine started with about 30 miles on the odometer, I put my truck away with around 630 miles or so. It had gotten slightly louder between 30 miles and 630. As insignificant as it may seem, the noise isn't normal. You paid for a new truck because you didn't want the issues. Now you and I both have issues. I'll be curious to see how both are handled.

35 mile drive this morning and I can't stand this noise anymore.

Can't hear the radio, every time you touch the gas at 70-74 it whines, every time you let off it whines now.. this is a new problem that I didn't have before.

Noise seems to be related to the temp outside. Quieter on warmer days.

1600 miles now, if I have time today i'm going to swing by the dealer on the way home and discuss this.

Can't believe my brand new truck is a heap.

Just got off the phone with the dealership. They don't have "time" to look at it until next week and no loaners available. The service rep I spoke to was the one I've been working with through this entire process and was less than friendly about it.. like this is somehow my fault that they sold me GARBAGE!

In the meantime every time I drive anywhere I have to put up with an irritating noise and a potential safety risk.

The gears whine when you're on the throttle and now if you let off the throttle, they moan as the pressure is released. The sound is exactly the same but moved from ~78mph to ~74mph at its loudest. The moaning sound is a new one that it did not used to do.

To put this in perspective.. I bought my truck on 2/29. It's not even a month old yet. It had 37 miles on it. For 6 days of this month they kept it. In that time I have put 1600 miles on my truck, and 500 on their first loaner.

I drive a LOT. I need a reliable vehicle. THAT IS WHY I PURCHASED NEW AND DIDN'T SAVE MONEY TO BUY MORE TRUCK FOR LESS MONEY WITH USED!

And this is what I have to deal with? A rude service advisor who thinks I'm just someone with a 15 year old car that's complaining because I have problems with it?

As one of my coworkers loves to say "I'm LIVID!" right now.

The service after the sale is embarassing for a BRAND NEW TRUCK that is running like garbage. I expect this from Dodge. I do not expect it from GM.. perhaps I was wrong to even consider this truck. I should have looked at Fords..

I made the mistake of owning 2 K2 trucks in the last 2 years. My 2014 died on me at 56k miles when the transmission began to slip. It was a used rental truck so I chocked the problem up to this.

I was sadly mistaken.. these trucks are poorly made.
