Auto Transmission Filter Replacement Interval

I typically service my transmission on my 2002 Silverado every 30K miles, as a result of towing (maybe overkill). In the past I've had the dealer do it. They have only replaced the filter every other service (60K miles). I am now taking it to an dependent shop and debating whether or not to have the filter changed, since it was done at the last service. The cost for a filter/fluid change is $250 or $75 just for the fluid alone. What is the consensus? Thanks...

Keeping fresh fluid in a transmission is the important thing. The filter is more of a catch screen. Fresh fluid change will provide a long life. So you are good to go. Dexron VI is a good fluid. Going full synthetic would even be better since you tow. It would provide better heat protection since you tow. Your transmission should last a long time with that type of care you give it. Most don't. It is a forgotten service to the average vehicle owner. Not to mention most trade often and it never becomes an issue.

Maybe it is overkill but if that is what you prefer I'd stick with the schedule you have already established. I think you are doing the right thing already. Fluid every 30K miles and filter every 60k should keep the transmission happy for a long time to come.
