1997 305 vortec 5 speed 2wd. The truck starts and idles good, it's runs good going through gears and at wide open throttle. When I try to maintain a steady speed it starts loading up and popping through intake. I have replaced the distributor, tune up, spider injector, fuel pump, mass air, coolant temp sensor, tps and iac. I have a fortune in this truck and it still has same problem. Please give me some ideas guys I'm about to pull my hair out!!!

P.s. if I would get more help in another thread on this site please inform me thanks!

That is a classic symptom of intake manifold gasket leakage.

I've replaced the upper set and I sprayed 2 cans of starting fluid around the intake and it won't pick it up. Do u still think it could be lower intake even if it won't pick up the starting fluid?

More than likely. At cruise, the engine is at a high vacuum state. Full throttle is next to zero, and idle is somewhere in between. It probably only leaks during high vacuum.

You don't have to use something that flammable (and explosive ...) to check for air leaks. Water works just fine - if there's a leak, water will find it. You'll hear the change. The leak won't be large enough there to worry about any damage. Back in the day, we used to pour a thin stream of water right in the carburetor to soften excessive carbon up.

Hate to ask but did you replace plugs and wires in the tune up?

New info today, I double checked for intake leak and some other things and noticed 2 days in a row it runs great when cold. Once it warms up it starts the poor running at light load. Also notices that once it starts the stumbling the idle drops down and when I drive it the rims won't drop between shifts, of I run it up to 2500 to make shift it stays at 2500 when I change gears

Ain't electronics fun?

Usually the opposite happens with leaky intake gaskets - it'll get a little better as the metal expands to seal the leak. Looks like we can possibly scratch that ...

At this stage you'll have to post some scan tool data - with the electronics on these vehicles, it literally could be one of 10,000 things ... and without the data, we're all just peeing in the breeze.

OK I have some videos and snapshots of it now. If anyone would like to help me I will gladly email them to you, I don't know how to upload them on here. I did notice a few things. When driving and it starts the miss it's in closed loop, I can floor it and it goes to open loop and miss goes away. It has 4 o2's, two of them are reading good but two of them are not reading much at all. The timing advance doesn't seem to change during miss, the maf, map are reading normal. Only other thing is when I'm setting still I can hold rpm around 2000 and it will gradually start to load up and miss, when it starts the miss the timing advance goes up quite a bit like its trying to compensate, but it doesn't change when I'm driving under a load.

Just go to Photobucket, upload them there, then hit the little picture square right above where you type (below and to the left of the smilie button, in the second row) and paste the direct link to the pic in the box.

You can also hit "More Reply Options" in the lower right corner and upload directly to the site, but I have had intermittent luck doing this. Was never able to upload directly ... then suddenly I was .... and now I'm back to Photobucket again. Even the smallest pic gets rejected on this site. I don't get it.

Since you mentioned how it shifts when it's warm, and how the RPMs don't drop when it shifts, etc I am wondering if maybe it actually isn't a trans problem with a solenoid or a converter or something. The fluid will act differently when cold than when it is warm or hot. I only mention this because I had a 1996 4.3 S-10 which had what felt like stumbling, hesitation, shudder when I hit the gas, you name it. Turned out to be the damn center support bearing and had nothing to do with the engine or any of the sensors people kept suggesting.

Those are 3 different videos I recorded, it's hard to hear the miss but if u pay attention to the throttle when it starts missing the worse I will open throttle do 100% and it will start running perfect, if I hold it steady at any rpm it will gradually start to load up and miss. The only thing I can see from the live data is I have a couple 02 sensors not reading well.

    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
    • So, lot's of googling and reading, and a trial fit found, that indeed they hit the newer fatter caliper. I did some re-testing today, and found just 3/16" worth of washers was enough for the wheel to spin freely. I added 2 more on each, and again it spun freely. Tested lock to lock with the 4 washers, about 5/16" not quite the 3/8" Im considering, but pretty close. No issues. I've been looking at the BORA .375" spacers and using extended lugnuts to get back lost thread due to the spacer. All the ET lugs I've seen are all .33" reach inside the wheel lug holes. For those that don't like spacers or think they're unsafe, I think it depends on what type of spacers you're using and making sure you get good quality hubcentric ones, and if you're using bolt on ones, regular mainenance, checking the spacer lugs. Not wanting or needing that much spread. Looking for the minimum that will let me run these rims and tires.  it does look to stick out a little, but I really want put these on. and use the stock all-terrains in the winter.
