Rear E-Brake Problems??

Recommended Posts

Ok, need some help guys. 2000 Silverado 1500 Z-71, 40,000 miles, original everything. Noticed a metal to metal squeak about 2-3 weeks ago, thought it was the front brakes, it wasn't, they are fine. Checked rear brakes, also fine. I think that I have finally narrowed it down to inside the E-brake drum. Now I have no idea WTF could have worn out in there, but am going to need to take it apart anyhow. Few questions.

Anybody else have this happen?

Is there any microfiche online that I can look at??

Do I need to remove the caliper and the caliper braket to get the rear rotor off??

Thanks in advance.

Yes, this happened to me as well. Apparently there is a bad designed clip that holds the e-brake shoe in place. The fix is a larger clip. I didn't know this was the fix until after I replaced the e-brake shoe and used the same small new clip that came with the new shoes. I found my problem when my 'rado failed state inspection in Texas b/c the e-brake wouldn't hold the vehicle.

In any case, it is a fairly straightforward replacement. They do charge a core charge so take the old ones off first and take them with you to the parts store. I don't remember a part number offhand since they didn't give me the box but I did have trouble finding a part store that even knew what I was talking about. Ended up at Pep Boys for $50.

Yes you do have to remove the caliper to get the rear disc off but I don't remember having to remove any brackets. Just two bolts for the caliper and then move it out of the way. You will have to break off the little metal clips on the studs holding the disc on if you haven't ever taken the rear disc off but that is no biggie.

If you have any further questions, just ask. A bit of advice though...don't overtighten the small screw that holds the clip holding the shoe in place. I overtightened it and sheared the head off. I then had to grind a notch in the screw to be able to back it out. A 30 minute job turned into 3+ hours. Not Fun!!!

Good luck,

Just spoke to my Auto Parts guy, why I trust any rely on 100%, he's telling me that the E-brake pads or shoes I guess, are a dealer only item?? WTF?

Posted

I was told they were a dealer only item from both Autozone and O'Reilley. When I called Pep Boys, they knew exactly what I needed. They were even made by Raybestos. I searched Raybestos website but wasn't able to come up with a part number.

As far as I know, there isn't a recall or a TSB for the problem. But the guy at the state inspection place said that about 75% of the Silverados, Tahoes, and Suburbans (new body style) that he inspects fail due to inoperative e-brakes.

I wish I had the part number to help you out further but like I said, I didn't get the box because there is a core charge and they put my old shoes in the box.

Let me know if I can help anymore,

TSB's that may be useful. I can't actually look them up but here are some numbers.

02-05-26-002 OCT 02 Brakes - Scraping Noise From Rear of Vehicle

02-05-26-001 SEP 02 Brakes - Rear Park Brake Service Kit Available

I don't know if either of these will help or not but it's worth a shot. These are for a 2000 Silverado.

Good luck,

:chevy: I'm in the same boat as you guys on my 2000 Z-71, except I have a little more time before my inspection is due in October here in Texas. Went by the chevy dealer to ask if there was a safety recall or if GM was doing anything about it. Was told that GM KNOWS there is a problem with them but is not OFFERING a fix unless you want to pay for it, of course. My truck is out of warranty (49000 mi) and the extended warranty will not cover it. They gave me a 800 number to call @ GM customer assistance. Spent 30 minutes on the phone arguing my point that it is a SAFETY ISSUE due to poor or faulty design and that it was not just MY truck, but literally hundreds of complaints on the internet. So I checked with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (www.nhtsa.dot.gov) or (1-888-DASH-2-DOT) and found a slew of the exact same complaints! So I'm going to file a formal complaint with them. I know I have seen many many complaints about this on this and other web sites. Maybe if we would ALL file complaints, this might spur some action. (Although I don't know why they have not already done something about it) But I guarantee when somebody sues GM for millions because some loved one got run over by a rolling truck-they MIGHT do something! Let's all get together and blitz NHTSA with formal complaints!!

I filed my complaint a month ago when I had to replace the e-brake shoes. I too think that if enough people post complaints, maybe GM will do something about it. In the meantime, I still have my receipt for the shoes and will attempt to get the General to reimburse me for the faulty things if they ever do decide to do something.

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode.
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
    • // Thank you, also for your  response. More information is always good. This 2013 GMC is most likely my 'forever truck"-I'm 77 and retired...and truck only has 42K on it-very clean-so I try to keep it that way.  Tks again for your  response- glenn
    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads
    • ///// Ok--Thanks for that info--I could not find yesterday when I looked for the specs on that NAPA filter what I wanted. Their website is not very user friendly. I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought. Anyway-Thank you -Sir for your response.   glenn
