Prospective Silverado Buyer

Hello all, I am looking at all my options on full size pickups and wanted to see if the current model Silverados really do all have the "chevy shake"? I have read through maybe 1/4 of the 500 plus page thread on the issue here on this site but wanted to know what percentage of trucks sold actually experience this? Is it enough to warrant going with a Ford and Dodge as better option? I seem to see more new Silverados here in souther california with what appear to be happy owners... IMHO the Silverados are the best beefy looking trucks out there but I don't want to buy a 40k plus rattle shake vibration machine. Any incite from current owners would be appreciated. Thanks

Just be sure to test drive it real good. My truck and countless others are butter smooth. Take it out on the highway and get up to 75 mph or so. Most threads I've read say the vibs are bad 65-75 mph and some in the 40-50mph range. If it's a vibrator you should feel it, should be obvious

Thanks, I definitely will test drive the truck at those speeds but the problem is iv read that this vibration sometimes appears up to after 2000 miles of use, how many problem free miles do you have on your truck if you would not mind me asking.

There are plenty of threads on f150forum.com of the new f150 having vibration issues too. Perhaps we can start calling it the "ford flutter". My point being a lot of things are embellished on the Internet. Go test drive each truck throughly to make a sound decision. For the record I have 37K vibration free miles.

Presently, about 6400, unchanged since day 1. My Silverado is the nicest vehicle I have ever owned, by a long shot

I work at the number 6 dealership in the whole country and I am one of the top 10 salesman in the state. The first I have heard about this is on this forum. It is a very small number of people that experience this.

Thanks I will put the chevy back at the top of the list since it is the best looking

I bought a '14 Silverado LTZ in November of '13. My next door neighbor bought an F150 with Ecoboost.. My truck is the smoothest nicest vehicle I've ever owned, and that's quite a few. The neighbors Ford blew the bottom end out of the engine. He drove a little white loaner car for a month while they fixed his Ford. I believe GM builds great quality trucks. Honestly, they are all nice. If you test drive it and it doesn't vibrate I doubt it ever will. I bought the truck I thought looked the best and I'm glad I did.

There is an extensive 576 ongoing thread on this site http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/153186-shake-or-vibration-issues/?view=getnewpost people getting lemon law and GM doing buy backs :-/ but perhaps it only affects less than 10% of vehicles and most are good?

No way in hell that I would get an eco-boost, V8 all the way either chevy 5.3 ford 5.0 or dodge 5.7, boosted motors take more abuse then NA and won't last as long.

The reality probably respresrents a thousand or so vehicles. They sell 500-600k + silverados every year.

so - more likely a fraction of 1 percent experience this. A SMALL FRACTION of ONE PERCENT.

Test drive the car you want to take home - if they "swap" one in from another dealership - DRIVE IT BEFORE YOU PAY

I insist on it with my customers - I just picked up an LTZ/Z71 from another dealer for a customer and on the drive back to my dealership the gas pedal felt weird and the engine idled higher than normal. I brought it to our shop foreman and it needed a computer flash and a new gas pedal. Work done the morning he picked the truck up. So they aren't all shipped perfect but if you have a good SALESMAN that CARES - Things get done.

I like fords - the naturally aspirated ones.

My truck a '14 has 20K on it with no vibrations. Now my salesman bout one shortly after me and he had vibration problems and went through 8 different Goodyear Wrangler SR-A before it was finally resolved the the verdict was it was poor quality tire not the trucks fault. So at least for my dealership any truck that dos have vibration issues they put another brand of tires on the truck. But as previously stated is far and few in between.

I bought a Silverado knowing about the "Chevy Shake". My 15 has about 3000 miles on it and no shake. Every brand of truck out there is going to have its issues, that is why they come with a warranty and that is why there are good lemon laws in the states.

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because it’s in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
