My Plasti Dip Disaster

Recommended Posts

I've never Plasti Dipped anything before. But I was looking for a way to customize my wheels. I researched vinyl wraps, but wasn't sure I could pull that off. I came across Plasti Dip and thought, yeah, I can do that.

So I did. The first wheel looked fantastic. Then I pulled the tape off and chunks of plasti dip came with it. :M16: Curse words flew fast and furious. I pulled it all off and gave up.

So my question for you guys is this: What did I do wrong? Pull the tape too soon? Too late? :dunno:

It was about 20 minutes after I sprayed it.

Currently soothing my broken heart with Lagunitas IPA. So I'll be ok. But I may wanna try again some day. Help me please.

Too late. WAAAAY too freakin late. Rip that tape as soon as you drop the can. And drop it. Don't set it gingerly. Drop it and rip.

Why not get them powder coated?

How many coats do you apply?

Just go with one, heavy (riiiight up to the point of sagging) coat and pull the tape. This stuff is rubber, builds MUCH faster than water borne paint. If you're using tape, can't go with multiple coats as you found out. Trust me, works. I have stripes on my truck using this technique which have been on there going on two years now.

Pretty sure that's exactly how you don't apply PlastiDip.

First layer should be a light dusting. You can apply as many or as few layers as you want as long as you let each layer dry. Do not over saturate or else you'll get drips. I recommend 1/2 a can or up to one full can per wheel, depending on wheel size. Prep-work is vital.

Just use a razor blade to nip the rubber off the tape as you pull it off. I've done several vehicles and have never had a problem with this.

This is the look I was going for. So if I gotta go all around this with a razor as I pull the tape I'm gonna go insane. On the YouTube vids they just spray it, pull the tape, and bing, bang, boom it's glorious.

Can't figure out why I took chunks of Plasti Dip when I pulled the tape? Maybe I should just go powder coat.

I respectfully disagree. You can do it the hard way if you wish, but this is totally unnecessary. Dip does NOT spray like paint. It's aerosolized rubber. It behaves as such.

If you are going to use the dip edge technique or otherwise cut it, then sure, multiple light coats. But if you intend to establish a line with masking tape, pulling tape tape during the wet coat is the only way. Anything else is just risky or gonads and strife.
