Catback Install (GM Borla) with Hellwing Rear Sway Bar

Recommended Posts

I just received my GM Borla dual side exit catback.

I crawled under the truck last night to eye up where I may cut the factory exhaust to remove it. I am looking at the 6" straight section of pipe after the muffler where it angles up over the rear axle.

I noticed that if I try to do a one piece removal that the rear sway bar will need to have the end links pulled to give me room to wiggle out the exhaust to the rear.

I then got worried that the twin tailpipe on the GM Borla catback will not clear the swaybar.

Has anyone installed any kind of side exit catback, preferably the GM Borla, with a Hellwig rear sway bar installed? I'd really hate to lose the swaybar just to install the exhaust.

How do you like the sway bar ? does it help, or a waste of money .

thetruck454 has Borla and Hellwig installed. He has the Borla dual rear exit though.

I have the Hellwig sitting in the box in the garage still. I plan to install it once I get all my exhaust figured out.

I like the sway bar a lot. I think it really helped the handling. A couple of months later I also installed the Hellwig front sway bar too. I couldn't notice much of a difference from the factory bar.

I really don't want to have to remove the rear bar just for the exhaust.

I moved it bc it pertains to an aftermarket exhaust and sway bar

Thanks. I ended up double posting because I didn't know how to move it to the correct forum.

Thanks for the info. I contacted thetruck454 and he confirmed that the dual side exit Borla will not fit with the rear sway bar installed.

He did get the dual rear exit Borla to work but had to modify the driverside end link bracket on the sway bar to reposition the top of the end link closer to the truck centerline. Then he had to shift the spare tire a bit to the passenger side when cranking it up to its nested position.

I think I'm going to request an exchange of the dual side exit for dual rear exit. This little lesion learned will cost about $260 with restocking and added postage.

If using a rear sway bar, be very careful on the exhaust tailpipe configuration.

my corsa side exit hits the swaybar slightly when the exhaust has fully heated up and "extended" ironically there isnt really any marking on the pipes and ive never actually heard it hitting, just caught my leg on it one day walking by the back of the truck. im sure i could slightly adjust the exhaust and make it go away though.

truck is also a 6.2, and the exhaust is a full 3.5in, so food for thought.

Crap!

I have the sway bar installed, GM Borla side exit NIB (for sale section) and waiting for headers to show up to see how truck sounds before installing the exhaust.

Guess will be selling the exhaust for sure, the benefits of the sway bar are worth more, plus can always get the sound I want via a muffler change only which is what i should have done from start.

I passed on the front bar, not much bigger in size even though it is a lot beefier (weight wise) bar.

Not sure what sound you're after, but I am very happy with exhaust now. Headers, ORY, OEM Catback with Borla 40359 Muffler in place of the OEM muffler and flapper. Left the resonator in place.

Since my exhaust is basically in the OEM position still, I shouldn't have any issues installing the Hellwig.

No problem!

I couldn't justify the price tag on a cat back for minimal gains and just sound. The borla muffler I want is $150. So lol have room down the road for a sway bar.

So you would replace the muffler only and leave the rest of the piping stock? Let me know how that works because I have to agree the cost is too much. I really did want dual back exhaust but not for 1500.

Yes. If you look up YouTube vids about the borla touring and sport gmpp mufflers you will see. I called Borla and they recommended the gmpp to just replace the factory muffler but keep the flapper.

For those that want to see what I did to make the borla dual rear exit fit with the sway bar. It *may* fit with the dual both side exit, but there is no way it will fit with the dual same side exit. I also agree the rear sway bar makes an enormous difference. Between my sticky summer tires and the rear sway bar, this thing flat out rails for a 6,000lb truck
