Probably not a new topic but please excuse me I'm new here...

Truck has 50K on it and with no problems until today. Started fine this morning and drove to my son's house about 24 miles. When I left there it started up fine but I noticed that lights were coming on all over. Lights like "Service 4wd, Traction Control, Power Steering Drive with Caution" and the engine light came on. I drove it back home with it running about 2.5K rpm at 60 mph (should be about 1.5K rmp),but pulled into a service station and turned off the motor. Started back up ok but lights came on all over again but this time when I back up (out of the parking spot)and put in in "D" , I was surprised by a clunk and a jolt by the transmission?? Got it into the subdivision where I live and after stopping at a stop sign (up hill grade) I was lucky to make it away and into the driveway. Had the gas all the way down but the engine did not race ..... just NO power. Now the engine will not start or even try to turn over. Key in and turned it as if there was a short as the light on the dash go almost out (they come back on when I release the key).... Any help would be appreciated as I will be calling AAA for it to be towed into the dealer......

Start with a battery check / replacement it needed. From what you're saying its a power issue. Remember, the ECM and TCM need a minimum of 14 volts to properly operate. Start there, then check the alternator output.

That sounds like a bad battery. Get that checked at Autozone if it will start again. They can tell you if it's good. What was the voltmeter on the dash showing with the truck off? With the truck running? That will probably help you find your answer.

Definitely sounds like a lack of voltage to the components. Remember, in modern vehicles, electricity is equivalent to the blood that flows through our veins. Without sufficient power these vehicles will go completely haywire and do all sorts of funky crap.

my truck has had similar issues and my local dealer had me lock and unlock the drivers door manually three times. They said something was triggering the theft system and that was how you reset it. Your's might be something different but the couple times my truck didn't start thats all i have done and it's worked. good luck

If I was a betting man I would bet that your battery is bad and caused all those weird issues with your truck. If you are still under warranty then take it / tow it to a dealer and let them replace it under warranty as these batteries should last at least 3 years or 36k miles. If not then you need to test your battery and make sure that it is the culprit.

I think he is out of warranty at 50k...

Had the truck towed to the dealer today and when we took it off the truck it started up but all kinds of light came back on..... Service 4wd, Trailer Brake, Power Steering Drive with Care and Traction Control light. Went outside with the service writer and would not start but all the bad lights were still there. Note that the indication that shows it is suppoesed to be in "Park" was not illuminated. Pulled the shiffer up and down serveral times and no response. Dealer told me he will not be able to get to it till Friday AM... Could the tranny sensor or cable cause all these issues? or is it the onboard computer? Now I'm wondering if GM will even cover any this as part of a warrant issue with 50K plus on it?? (Doubt it).

Just got a call from the dealer and thought I would share it..... The problem was the transmission control module. Seems this has a bunch of electrical attachments including the truck not starting. Dealer reported this is a 1200 bill but because its with the transmission it will be covered under warrenty.... Did I luck out!!!

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
