2013 Silverado 1500, Towing ?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2013 Silverado, extended cab. 6ft box, with a automatic / M transmission. P R N D M , The "M" is for manual and has 6 gears, I know i do also have a tow haul button, and a trailer brake system, I understand that ! but my question is ? What position do I use to pull the trailer in ? Drive and tow haul ?, M 4,5,6 ? Seems when I do it in Drive and tow haul it kicks in and out of passing gear alot ?? What would be the best for the transmission. Thanks for any help!!

Hi barbell, Welcome to the forum.

When I tow my boat I use Drive and tow haul most of the time, I think it depends on how much weight you are towing AND the type of traffic you are in

What are you towing?

Tow/Haul is designed for towing heavy. Per the owners manual...

Tow/Haul is designed to be most effective when the
vehicle and trailer combined weight is at least 75 percent
of the vehicle’s Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR).

Tow/Haul also changes the shift points when decelerating, to increase engine braking.

If the transmission "hunts" a lot, then use M5. If it still hunts, use M4. 5th and 6th gears are both overdrive gears, so depending on your engine and your load, you may need to keep it in 4th to keep the engine in the power band.

Use the tow haul mode and leave it in 4th to prevent it from hunting gears.

It's gonna depend on the terrain and possibly even head wind. I just got back from a trip from Michigan to Georgia and back pulling the same size travel trailer. For the most part I left it in D with tow/haul mode on. I eventually used manual when I got into Ohio and Michigan because it was constantly hunting between 4th and 5th, I must of had a strong head wind because the terrain was flat. Once I turned west onto I94 it held speed in 5th no problem. If you set it to 4th gear it will down shift if needed, so don't expect to have to constantly shift it manually...it'll just keep it from going above 4th if that's what you have it set at.

As others stated Drive and Tow/Haul on and when it starts hunting gears drop it down one

Tow/Haul changes the drive shift points to higher rpm, and holds gears longer as well for engine braking. Also, your one touch turn signal feature will do 6 blinks instead of 3. I use it for towing any size trailer...
