can i make the auto headlight ''on'' function not work

The less control you have the less thinking you have to do until that lack of thinking becomes a habit and starts getting in the way. I think I prefer to decide what I want to have automated and when.

I do agree with you on that with some things like lane departure and adaptive cruise control. Things like that. But, I don't think if I get into another vehicle that I will forget how to turn the headlights on when it gets dark or is raining.

My truck has auto headlights. As in once the truck is started they are on, unless I turn them off (which i always do). It's annoying so I can relate with the OP. I don't mind if they turned on at dusk by not everytime I start my truck. Just a pet peeve.

Well there ya go. I'm not the only one. I think it should be in the settings maybe. As optional? That way no need either way. That would be best scenario really. I'm gonna get around to the spring mod. Someone else did it and it seems to work ok

You're talking about daytime running lights. The taillight running lights aren't on. Auto headlights will turn the running lights on when it's dark enough or if you have the windshield wipers on for a long enough period of time.

you are correct. My headlights turn on when it gets dark enough too, even after I shut off the DRL's.

Yes they do. I didn't even know bout the wipers tie in. I just turned on the hdlgts anyways. Here in Florida wipers and no hdlgts gets u a ticket

Manually turn them off by turning the knob to the left.

I can see that it's just something you're not used to and you'd rather decide when it comes on. I came from a '98 Z71 to my '14 so I had to get used to all of the stuff. But, really it's one less thing you have to worry about and really it's not anything that should give you grief. If anything it helps you. And again, you can turn them off even in the middle of the night, just turn the knob to the left. Also again I don't think DRLs are really a bad thing. I thought it would make my headlights go out more often in my '98, but rather you believe me or not, I never had a bulb go out on the front the 10 years I had it from '04 until '14. It was always the taillights and my buddy with an '06 Sierra si the same way where the tails go out a lot but the front haven't gone out unless I can't remember. When it gets dark it's not hard to remember to turn them on, but can forget to turn them on when it's raining. Even then you at least have the daytime running lights. I don't like the systems that's literally "help" you drive to where you can get lazy. Like lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and things like that. But, I don't think auto headlights is in that group. I'll also say again that if I get into another vehicle that doesn't have auto headlights it's not like I forgot how and when to turn them on.

My truck came from Canada and it sounds like it is the law that the DRL's stay on all the time. Somebody can chime in if they want. I can turn the knob to the left and they go off, but as soon as I put it in drive they are back on and I can't turn them off until I'm in park again.

Do I need to have the bcm reset for US settings?

I just don't like the ballasts igniting all those extra times. They pop on when I start the car in the garage then turn off in the driveway, on again in the tunnel then off. I pull into my work covered parking... on again. Park. Then reverse order in the way home. So my HID turn in 6-8 times a day depending on my route. So close to 2000 times a year for no reason and doesn't count when I legitimately need them on.

So is there a pinout that can be pulled for the "auto" feature?

Hadn't thought of that. I am gonna mod the sw someday. Hoping some one can figure out whether it's a bit latch or hard wired relay etc

another guy on here swapped the DRL pin in the headlight connector for the orange park lights. his headlights function like normal. if you look at like the 8th or 9th page of disable DRL thread the pinout chart its in there.

Thats great because then it automatically just turns on the marker lights? If I understand correctly. Could possibly connect it to a set of auxiliary lighting.

You could just pull the light sensor, it's that little dome at the center of the dash. Jumping the connection with a resistor fools the bcm into thinking it's always daylight. A 5w 1k Ohm resistor would probably do the trick.

It's likely easier/more effective than messing with the headlight knob. With either mod the truck will still automatically turn lights on when you use the wipers for more than a few seconds.
