I own a 2003 Silverado Z71. My a/c blows cold but it idles rough when the air is on and it makes a loud machine gun like noise on acceleration. I have read on here that I should just replace my compressor. My question is even with the air still cold is the clutch going bad as can I just replace that or the tensioner need replacing or should I just go ahead and replace the ac?

If the compressor completely goes bad, you will need a flush at least along with a few cheap parts, and possibly worse. So, whatever you decide, don't take long. The potential bill will just climb. If it's just the clutch yes that can be replaced on most compressors.

Clutch can be changed, but for just a couple of dollars more you can get a NEW complete compressor. Not worth changing just the clutch in my opinion.

I'm not trying to take the cheap route either but will replacing the clutch fix the problem? It blows freezing cold still. I'd rather replace just the clutch if the compressor isn't bad.

It's probably not the clutch but the compressor.

 

Replace it before it seizes or otherwise grenades.

 

If you let it go too long, it will fill the system with trash, making the repair much more laborious and increasing the chance that even after flushing, some junk will remain in the system. This poses a threat to your new replacement compressor.

 

It's really risky to run it until it quits...
