Paint Chipping?

Only thing with the clear bra is when it's got some age on the unprotected part. I wish I had taken a pic of the truck I saw the other day. The bra was installed from one wheel well to the other about a foot back from the front edge of the hood everything was covered. It was a black 07-13 model Sierra. The paint under the bra looked brand new like it was just waxed. The unprotected part was not bad but, was faded. It looked like crap IMO.

Take a razor blade and poke the air bubbles right in the center. Then get something flat and plastic and try to work out the bubble.

I will be honest, it looks pretty crappy. We have a guy at my dealership that comes to do all the clear bra stuff and it's pretty much perfect.

Also, we do warranty bumpers on any one that asks. I'm a painter, I've done over 50 so far this year. We grind them down to metal and re spray. Then it gets clear bra.

Even though it's not a warranty issue, we still do it for anyone.

Thanks. Funny that were both in MB...

Just to make sure I understand, someone gets a paint chip on their bumper, brings it in and you guys strip, re-paint and clear bra the bumper for free under 'warranty' ???

This was one of the reasons I traded a High Country in and chose the chrome nose of the LT. The paint on these trucks is the worst I have see since the 1980's

That is unacceptable, I have my entire rockers front to rear done and my hood and bumper with no visible bubbles or marks.. your situation looks like an incompetent installer. If your installed does not cooperate I would reach out to the manufacturer of the product.

Thanks! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't expecting too high of a standard. I will follow up with the dealer and get this corrected.

You have to have a lot of chips. It can't be just one lol.

The clear bar is about 50/50 free. It depends on the customer. I cam give you my shops info if you wamt to phone our manager amd talk to him in a pm.

You being a painter, and for a dealer... I'm not real crazy about the clear bra thing. That said, if I was to pay for it myself, would applying an old fashioned solvent based (not water based) urithane to the front parts of my '16 Z71 help prevent stone chips? I'd probably take the truck to an independent shop.

Solvent base and water base end up to be the exact Same thing once the water/solvent evaporate away. To be honest, water base paint is light years better to spray than crappy solvent.

Nothing will help your chips other than a clear bra. You can't even tell it's applied to the bumper, not sure why you are against it. We've never had one complaint... Ever.

The reason it chips so bad is because it's a solid metal bumper, it has no give at all when hit. The only thing for the rock to do is bounce off the thing. Hoods etc have some give. To be fair, it's not that big of a problem, we only get maybe one out of 30 trucks sold back to do it.

Thanks for the feed back. Can't say I'm against the bra, totally. I just thought old school urithane might be better protection than the clear that's on my 2016. I'm retired and don't drive as much as I used to. So I only have around 1400 miles on my truck, and already have 5-6 pin head size chips on the front end. The '07 GMC I had before this truck had 130K on it and front end paint had very few chips. Paint on my previous trucks held up to the chipping better also. The paint or top coat on the older trucks was/is obviously tougher than what's on my '16. So I figure putting the same product on the '16 would be better protection than what ever is on there now.

This has to be another GM defect. I have 4 separate locations on my 2015 Silverado where the paint had lifted and then flaked off. It is continuing to spread like a cancer. $50k for a truck made in Mexico.

What locations are peeling?

There was a bulletin on paint for the 2015's, but I think it applies to the Ft Wayne plant only.

Right now its bubbling and flaking off on the drivers side rear door by the window, above the same door on the cab, driver's side front pillar next to the windshield and on the roof of the truck. It starts out as small blisters, then it flakes off to look like little paint chips and then the bubbling paint continues to lift the paint and flake off.

Mine is coming off, not chipping, just above the third brake light. So I called the local dealer and they told me that paint is only covered under the 3/36 warranty which I'm out of. I've read others having the same problem as me so you may want to check out that spot on yours as well. Looks to me like it started under the light.

    • I am having similar issues.. 08, 4.8L granted I did had a fender bender and minor damage up front passenger side but I don’t think it had anything to do with it.. I had the high and low pressure checked and my fan for my radiator keeps coming on.. replaced the pressure switch and don’t want to keep throwing parts at it. I did have some minor problems here and there like on long road trips sometimes the ac would get a little warm and then on the highway as soon as I give it a little gas or get a little heavier on the petal it started running cooler. Never had an issue with the ac besides the here and there.. but I also started having issues when I fuel up now it takes a bit to start ( super embarrassing) it runs fine and once started ( only happens after fueling up) starts fine any other time. Could they be related?
    • Spent a small fortune on fuel this weekend.   $6.69 diesel, 18 gallons of that. $6.99 92-octane ethanol free, 10 gallons of that for yard machines $5.59 87-octane for one of the cars, 11 gallons.   $250+ and I didn't even get a tug.   Hormuz ain't Hormuzin again, did not see that coming...LOL
    • Appreciate the advice. I've watched multiple videos. Most showing the most complex for those that have a center console, to one that showed maybe 2 pieces of trim being removed, like 6 screws, pulling back the screen and switch assembly, and installing the inline module. And this was a new/newer Silverado. That didn't look too bad. All the others show alot of trim pieces that need to be removed. I've broken those kind of tabs/clips on my C8 Corvette trying to get to the battery, and that was a lot less clips than what I think is involved here after watching multiple videos and looking at my dash today. I have one on the way. Called a reputable stereo place about installing it and got a "minimum" price of $175. Ouch! Looking forward to seeing what the instructions have to say.
    • Hard to say what the issue might be. Anything from the ability to cool the AC condenser up front, to blend door issues in the HVAC unit, to refrigerant charge, to compressor issues or issues in the lines.   Report back what the techs find on the 29th.   GM has service publications which list acceptable vent temperatures and AC pressures at given ambient temps and humidity. They probably won't touch the system if it's operating within those ranges.   I'm also surprised to hear your 2024 with the L8T is still using R134a? I was pretty sure the HD's had switched to the new refrigerant around 2020.
