help in choosing a ranger

Recommended Posts

Going to be looking for a ranger in the near future. Going to be used for some general work around the house, hauling some firewood and also some recreational use. Looking for a used one because I know they are pricey. What sizes do the rangers all come in and what are all the top speeds? Which size/model sounds look best for me?

We're driving a 2015 Ranger XP900 right now. We've been using it for the last year and it's been amazing. It has 68-horsepower and the top speed is limited to 55-mph (which it gets up to extremely easily)

I've done a wide variety of things with it including:

I consider it a mini-pickup for our "property" and use it to do larger projects like grading beaches and roads with it. I plowed the public ice rink on a local lake last winter with it and have used it to clean a lot of dead wood out of the woods around my home. It can hold 1500lbs or something stupid. It can tow 2,000 lbs and has a trailer hitch.

It also makes for great fun on local trails. However, the XP900 is wider than other ATVs and you can be limited to certain trails. The midsize 570 would be smaller but not as capable.

We have almost 1500 miles on our loaner from Polaris. I've done all my own maintenance. Anything you want to know, I can help you with.

How would the 570 compare in payload, towing and top speed? Just trying to determine what size I need.

Seems like the 570 can tow 1500 and haul 1000lbs. Not sure about top speed.

I have the 2016 570 midsize, and it can tow 1500lbs, and haul 1000lbs. It is perfect for us, small enough for the trail, but big enough for yard work.

I was going to put a plow on it, but I bought another Silver Rodao. So maybe next year.

Top speed is between 50-55. It depends on who is making the claim. I have had ours up to 45mph. I still had more to go, but the road ended.

I have a RZR 570. I use it more for work that trail riding. The 'bed" holds 300 lbs and it can tow about 750. I have a smaller trailer I use to move dirt, brush, firewood etc. I like the combo. With the small bed and the trailer it suits me well. If you are asking about top speed and you plan on using it for that I'd suggest a RZR. I drove both when looking for a Side by Side. Big difference between the two. If I recall the Ranger had a bench seat for shoehorning 3 people in the front I preferred the buckets in the RZR. Also, RZR has a smaller footprint, it will get you to places the Ranger might not

Very good points. I too drove both, looked closely at both. I settled on the Ranger for cost. About $500 less, and utility. But it was close. I stopped by the polaris dealer once a week to look at both. Both the RZR, or the Ranger will do you well.

Reason I ask is about top speed is only for when I am traveling on paved roads I want to make sure it can keep a decent top speed. I definitely dont want a razor and I know I will be being used. I would like to find one for around or under 5 grand. Are the early year ranger 400 & 500 decent? Top speed for those? Also it doesn't have to be a ranger id consider looking at rhino or a mule. I want the bench seat tho for 2 riders and from what ive seen the rhino only has two bucket seats...

The paved roads may be a sticky wicket... I only know about New Hampshire, but public paved roads are off limits for ATV and UTV use. Up north, some towns have allowed UTV use on some dirt roads and a very small amount of paved roads for trail connections only.

I've seen one guy get his kubota side by side registered as a construction equipment, but I'm not sure how he pulled it off.

The paved road top speed issue may become a non issue once you look into the laws.

Cant go wrong with the ranger. The 900 works just fine for everyday use, heck even the 570 is a beast. I have the 900 and its never had a issue and I have put it through some tough mud.

Also I rode in a buddies Mule Pro FXT. That will be my next SXS. Way more comfortable than the ranger in my opinion. So go take a look at one of those before you buy. Only problem is they arent as fast as the Rangers.

I've had mine up to the mid 40s as well. I swapped the stock Carlisle tires for ITP Baja Cross tires (sized similarly to the Carlisles). I found the Ranger's steering felt better @ higher speeds with the ITPs. I think the Baja Cross is flatter 'across' the tire that the 'rounded' Carlises.
