6Spd Trans Fluid Change: Interval and fluid

The easy way is to get a cheap vacuum extractor and suck all the fluid out through the dipstick tube.

I was thinking about doing that, but not sure what percentage of the fluid it will pick up

When I did mine, I was able to get all but about 1/4 to 1/2 a quart out through the dipstick tube...takes a piece of polyethylene tubing (I think the stuff I use is 3/8" OD?) about six feet long...

 

That's a 2500, can't imagine the 1500 setup would be much different?

That's why I didn't put a drain plug in mine...I can vac five quarts out through the dipstick tube...with a filter change is what, 6.3 quarts?

Confused, in one post you say 1/2 quart in another you say 5 quarts through the dipstck tube

I'd rather not drop the pan if I'm being honest.

The vacuum extractor is great but that does not clean the magnet inside the pan nor does it replace the filter in the pan. The 'ideal' setup is having an internal screen for large debris inside the trans, magnetic drain plug on the pan, and an external filter which is the primary filtering element. That way we would never need to drop the pan, just drain the fluid, change the external spin-on filter and fill it back up. Like an engine oil change. I think that is what the Allison transmissions have gone to from what some members have posted. God willing, I should still have this truck in 50-60k and at that point if i'm still looking at keeping the truck another few years I will spring for the PML pan. In the meantime, I'll keep an eye out on the forum and eBay for a used PML pan.

Is the only negative to extracting via vacuum, that you might not get all the debris on the bottom of the pan?

 

Also, so if you do a pan drop you get out 6.3qts and if you vacuum you get 5.5qts?

Umm, wait...you MISSED the point!

 

Vacuum out the pan, then DROP THE PAN with a half quart remaining, pull the filter, reinstall pan, refill, done! Clean pan drop...no drain plug needed.

 

And yes, I also vac out five quarts from time to time without a pan drop or filter change...about every 25k miles. Just how much debris do you think is floating around in there if the fluid doesn't show anything...that filter isn't much better than a window screen.

FYI, the pan in my truck at 95k miles was clean, magnet had very little on it (not enough to prevent it from functioning), and there was nothing in the filter...I changed everything just last weekend.

 

And it's not like I baby this thing...it tows moderately heavy at least 10% of the time, hauls heavy quite a lot, and is my daily driver for 100 mile daily commute...

 

So everyone else should expect their pan to be orders of magnitudes worse for what reason?

Ok I think I'm going to just vacuum and replace every 30k. Should keep it nice and fresh.

 

Any recommendations on the pump?

Incase you werent aware, i was just googling it and the 6l80 takes 9 quarts. Usually some in the converter.

I know, it was just an FYI incase you were under the impression it only takes 6

6.3 quarts with a pan drop and filter from a 6l90e according to my manual. You only get about half what's in the total system.
